wow, I checked out Jackpot's site, and if you're into Bill Hicks, they're doing a free screening of his dvd tonight at Lola's Room!
Tuesday, November 30th, 2004 6:00 PM Bill Hicks DVD screening Lola's Room 1332 W. Burnside Ave. (Beneath the Crystal Ballroom) Price: FREE Bill Hicks described himself as “everything your parents hate, everything the church preaches against, and everything the government fears.” This legendary, explosive and controversial comedian used his stand-up routine to call out all of the crimes and mistakes of people in power, making just as many enemies as fans along the way. Nothing was sacred to his fearlessly confrontational approach—topics ranged from the government, to war, to sex, to drugs. “To me,” Bill Hicks once said, “the comic is the guy who says ‘Wait a minute’ as the consensus forms. He’s the antithesis of the mob mentality.” After one performance, Hicks had his leg broken by two Vietnam Veterans, and on another night had an audience member pull a gun on him during his routine. His attitude made him an inspiration to musicians, comedians, writers and filmmakers, and included among his dedicated fans are Tom Waits, David Cross, Tool, and John Cleese. This year marks the tenth anniversary of Hicks’ untimely death (he was 32) and this disc is the first official DVD release from this legendary maverick performer. This screening will present a full live performance as well as the documentary “Just a Ride” which surveys his remarkable career with insights from his peers including Brett Butler, Eddie Izzard, Richard Jeni, Jay Leno and David Letterman.
This is a FREE event, 21 and over.
