I'm curious and anxious to hear what the new stuff sounds like. From Rough Trade:

Quote:
Debut album THE RUNAWAY FOUND', released on Rough Trade earlier last year, was written by 17 year old singer Finn Andrews, in his home town of Devonport, New Zealand. It was recorded in London by Matthew Ollivier and Bernard Butler and featured Oliver Drake on guitar, Adam Kinsella on bass and Ben Woollacott on drums.

The album received great critical acclaim upon its release, but escalating difficulties in both the band and Finn's personal life caused the album's tour and press schedule to be cut short. The band parted company, and Finn returned to New Zealand for the next 8 months in order to find a band and write the follow up album.

Now 21, Finn has returned to London with an entirely new line-up and three years worth of songs for the new album. The band features Henning Dietz on drums, ex-Carrion Birds bass player Sophia Burn, and Liam Gerrard on organ and lap steel.

"Sophia, Liam & I were all very close at High School so it's a dream come true really to now have them in the band. Henning is a recent discovery but he is fitting in exceedingly well, which I suppose is not an easy thing tto do. I would have loved to have had them play on the first record but we were all kind of off doing our own things at that time."

"It's just been wonderful hearing these new songs for the first time with the full band and watching it all slowly take shape. There is a real love among us and a great deal of shared history that really does have a profound influence on the music. It's a great feeling."

THE VEILS are currently rehearsing for a small selection of live dates over the summer before returning to the studio in September.

'THIS COULD BE A ROARINGLY GREAT BAND'

'A STUNNING NEW VOICE'
Q MAGAZINE

'SHEER MANIC FERVOR AND DAGGER-THROUGH-HONEY VOCALS. ESSENTIAL FOR ANYONE WHO LIKES THEIR MUSIC TO STAND METAPHORICALLY ON A MOUNTAIN TOP AND RAGE AT DISTANT STARS.'
THE GUARDIAN

If you're in London, I received this from the Rough Trade mailing list:

THE VEILS showcase new material as well as play from their critically acclaimed Rough Trade debut album 'The Runaway Found'... Their live set sees them deliver catchy as hell emotive pop songs... Finn Andrews has a souringly soulful, tremulous voice (in the Jeff Buckley mould) that knocks your Starsailors and Turin Brakes into a cocked hat! joyful pain and gorgeous melancholy over minor chords, searing strings and a heartbroken passion the band can barely contain. There's hints of Smiths, Bunnymen and Nick Cave, but really it's the voice that will slay you...

'sheer manic fervor and dagger-through-honey vocals. essential for anyone who likes their music to stand metaphorically on a mountain top and rage at distant...' The Guardian

Half of a good record. I'm really going to miss that bass player.

They broke up?

I don't really need to listen to some rich Devonport kid anyway.

I think this came out last year in Europe, but finally comes out here today. I'll give it a listen if it shows up on Napster.

I saw 'em back in '04 @ Mercury Lounge in NYC with the old line-up and they were really, really good. Finn is a drama queen and plays the coy/shy/sensitive singer thing to a tee, but those songs were damn good live.
