Damn, new Pixies record (maybe). Paris, you have nothing? Start at the beginning.

i don't think this can possibly live up to expectations and thusly i am expecting nothing. not really excited or looking forward to it...we'll see what happens though.

I bought a copy of Honeycomb a few days ago, and I've been going through all my usual stages of post-purchase frankblackness.

For some reason, I'm always disappointed with each new FB release. I suppose it takes a while for me to hear the music for what it is, rather than for what I wanted it to be. That started from day one of his solo career, when the initial "Shit, this ain't the Pixies" response to Frank Black (the album) gave way to "Fuckin' excellent - this ain't the Pixies!" I really wanted Honeycomb to be a rollicking affair, something along the lines of the Band's oldies album Moondog Matinee, with FB having a blast in the studio - loose, rockin', and spontaneous - with all the great guest stars taking turns trying to upstage each other. Instead, it's the most mellow album in Black's catalogue. And, of course (inevitably), it's slowly growing on me. The 14 songs are pretty much a collection of laid back jams, as if the songs themselves were of secondary importance to the playing of those songs (even "Dark End Of The Street" barely distinguishes itself). I may change my opinion on that as I get to know the songs better, but for now it seems like a strategy that succeeds fine enough. The band is subtlely amazing, seemingly effortless (and all the more amazing for it), and the instrumental breaks are just so spot-on. Steve Cropper does some impressive work - his solos are so economical and understated and melodic (did Cropper make an appearance in the best guitarists thread?), and his rhythm work is a facking marvel. And not to single out just Cropper. Spooner Oldham's keyboards are sweeeet, and I'd be interested to hear our Obner bass experts' opinion on David Hood's (Patterson's dad, y'all) mastery. So overall, I'm liking this a lot (and a little more each day). Don't know how this'll sound to me after a few months. Album of the year or near the bottom of the Top 20? I really can't tell. But it's definitely another interesting chapter in FB's career.

Yeah, Rads I'm having a bit of a time with Honeycomb.

I agree with a lot of your thoughts particularly your hopes that the album would be looser and more "Rock"

It is an impressive piece of music though; Its just taking me a little longer than usual to accept it all.

Of course the same thing happened with Cult of Ray (something is just "off" with that rekkid) and I've never been able to embrace it......

Time will tell on this one.

As I'm listening to it for the first time yesterday (Thanks Loog), I was thinking, "Damn this is really chill, not what I expected. But I know if I listen four more times, I'll like it."

i've bene listening to this three times a day.
it really fits my mood right now.

confused and frustrated, but sort of content and mellow about it.

this is a very mature album, and it makes me feel old to love it as much as i do.

(for some dumb reason, this is the first FB album i got since Cult of Ray)

I can, but I'm not home until later today. If you still want/need it, PM me your AIM and I'll send it over when I get home around 5-5:30ish.

This is a fucking great bunch of songs, I may listen to this constantly all day. I've never been hugely enthralled with his solo work, but this is going to make me seriously go back and listen again.

Many thanks, Loog. This is my album for the week.
