Against my better judgement, and at a friend's request, I decided to give his site a chance. I was initially impressed with all the reviews and all the work he's put into it...

...and then I stumbled on to this...

Quote:
Blonde Redhead, Misery is a Butterfly (4AD)
I’ve never seen the appeal of this band. They took an obvious chunk of Sonic Youth’s sound and made it less accessible and less interesting. Live they were boring as hell. Apparently they’ve gone through some hardships that have added to their resolve to matter, and are at least attempting to sound more appealing. They’ve introduced some pretty elements, while still hanging on to somewhat fractured, tuneless structures. A little Deerhoof, Haco and Kahimi Karie influences have creeped in, which is an improvement. It’s normally something I’d like, but just can’t get excited about Kazu Makino’s occasionally grating voice and unintelligible lyrics. They’ve got a long way before they’ll deserve comparisons to the groundbreaking elegance of labelmates This Mortal Coil.

The sad part about it is, with this review, he probably convinced a few of his groupies (the people who can't get enough of his drivel) not to buy this beautiful album.

Usually F'n'B only reviews albums he likes, so I'm kinda impressed that he's finally picked a shitty band to dump on.

Blonde Redhead sucks. Sorry. Maybe if I listen to this album all the way through, I'll change my mind, but it will take a lot of convincing even to get me to that step.

Well, I'm not surprised. But I'm sure you'll agree with him on his rating of the Razorlight album (9+). Gimme a break.

They were way better live than I what I remembered of their record

Tony's site is an awesome resource, even for those who don't agree with every one of his reviews, and I don't know anyone who agrees with all of them.

blonde redhead is more than worth a couple of complete spins; i initially thought they were quite boring, but like so many bands that I like i gave them more than one listen, just to make sure I wasn't full of shit. by spin number 5 i was hooked, as you could be too...
(for the record, i don't often give a band more than 5 or 6 spins to win me over, but it's not uncommon to give that amount if they come recommended from people whose taste i trust, not that you should trust mine)

I looked at his site once, but then I got a little put off when I realized that every album on the site was at least an 8...those were supposed to be the substandard ones? With that, however, I did discover some new music.

Sounds to me like you went there just hoping to get offended at SOMETHING.

And although I don't agree with all of his reviews this one is absolutely correct.

Crushingly dull when I saw them live. Tired SY retreads, indeed. That was before the Misery album, which I haven't heard, but I wouldn't put it past fnb to be bang on correct there.
