last sunday, i finally got to see duncan sheik live. i have been wanting to see him since '97. to sum up the show - it was spectacular. DS is very talented. the main reason for this post is b/c duncan posted some comments on his website about his music. i thought it was an interesting read. hopefully you guys will too...

I gave up on him after his debut, but his talent is undeniable.

my friend worked at a borders, and Duncan played there before he was famous. My friend said he was the biggest asshole ever, and when he got semi-famous and my friend was all pissed.

I thought his last album, Daylight, was a turgid pile of dung, but I really like Phantom Moon and Humming. The sentiment is nice, but there's something disingenuous about this. I find it a little hard to take his talk about distancing himself from "likable pop" when his last album was filled with such obvious please-put-me-on-the-a-teen-drama type stuff (regardless of whether it actually happened or not, it just screamed sell-out, especially after Phantom Moon.) If he's truly moving away from stuff like that, good for him, and hopefully good for me, too. Just no more Daylight type stuff, please.

Yep. Blending Dylan McDermott with Neill Finn theoretically shouldn't work, but it does.

Yeah, quite a bit. It's dark and moody, but feels genuine, just like the even better Phantom Moon. I like parts of the self-titled quite a bit, but liked pretty much nothing off the last one.

Wasn't he talking about doing a follow up to PM?

well since i couldn't sell humming for even a dollar, maybe i'll revisit it (or did i throw it away), but that eagle mountain song or whatever was just cheesy as hell.

I'm a fan of his as well. There's no denying that his first album was best but there are some very, very good songs on both Humming and Daylight, for example: Rubbed Out, Various Degrees Of Con-Artistry, House Of Riches, and Magazines to name a few...

Phantom Moon I could never get into that much, it being a tribute to his hero Nick Drake.

Anyone who doesn't want his albums should send them to me please.

edit: According to his website, he has a new album due out soon called White Limousine. I will be first in line to buy this.
