I really don't think this will work without at least starting with open editing for everyone. No one is going to want to manage this process to that great of an extent. If it's successful and worth spending a lot of time monitoring, editing, etc. the process can be changed later.

I think what drinky meant was that if an entry didn't exist, anyone could add it. I'd like to keep control as democratic and decentralized as possible, which is why i like the idea of the main review being the highest-rated. Then there would be amazon-style reviews by anybody, and the overall rating would be based on the sum of all user ratings.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I like the rating idea, too.

This also won't work if the site goes down every 45 seconds or so. Seriously, what is up with that? If anything is going to drive people to CMJ's board, it's that. Not to knock Haq's efforts to keep the site going, but I've never been to a board that goes down as often as this one does. I can count on not being able to get to Obner at least half the time I want to.

Hm. I swear I tried this last week and it didn't work.

I think Rob Halford put it best when he said: ".ti, oD. ti, oD"

That's fair... some of these have been my fault. When I added features sometimes I've not been as careful as I should be and I overload the server. For that I apologize. We're moving to new servers over the weekend which should take care of some issues.

I'm not sure about the specific feature you were looking for but you have to register and log in for a lot of content over at AMG now. It's free to register though.

I don't know about what extra's you can get if you pay, I haven't looked into that.

I have never registered at AMG, but can still get plenty of content.

Could a wikipedia-style model work for a free allmusic substitute? A repository of information and cross-references on every artist imaginable, with an Amazon-style recommendation engine, that was unbeholden to corporate interests because any little band could add themselves? Does anything like this exist?

I like the track you're on with this, Haq (although it's a huuuuge undertaking). The wikipedia model is an interesting one - and I wonder how difficult it would be to find some way of adding a timeline context to each entry, so that visually you're seeing where things sit in the continuum... (criminy, I gotta think harder on what I'm even proposing). Anyway, there's potential for a good idea here.

The annoying thing about AMG registration is that it gives you some arbitrary numeric password that I haven't found any way to change. It's impossible to remember it, and never keeps me logged in like it's supposed to.

This is (and I think you know it) a very good idea, but sounds like a ton of work. But you know a lot better than I exactly how much work that would be, so if you think you're up to it, I think I can safely say we'd all do our best to contribute as much as possible.

Amen. Why does any site do this? I'm sure there's actually an explanation but I have 2 or 3 passwords I use for everything and hate having to use anything else. Granted, I just opt to be automatically logged onto AMG so it doesn't really matter most of the time but I still find it annoying.

Radcliffe, I think I know what you're suggesting and that sounds like a really interesting idea. I have no idea if it's possible but I like it. Maybe just having a creation date for entries would be good enough.

It does this because the AMG redesign was run by drunken monkeys.

Doesn't Wikipedia have a timeline?

It would be cool if we had a heirarchy system like everything2.com has...

I fear that especially early on this would cause content to appear too slowly.

But no one is going to know about it in the beginning anyway.
(relative to the amount of people on the internet) We can probably have something pretty sweet up and running by the time more people find out about our site, and soon we will be bigger and more hated than Pitchfork!

It might do - but I find Wikipedia a tangled mess to navigate. There may be a timeline in their History category, but I don't think there's one in Culture (for example). I'm thinking of something like an actual line, and as you drag the cursor along it different categories/genres might pop up, so visually you could see where, say, impressionist painters existed in comparison to cubists. Or something. And a click leads you into that particular era.

Disregard my comment. I thought you were looking for a history of changes to the entry.

I do like your idea though.

There is a way to change it to a password you can remember, but it was so long ago that I don't remember how I did it. Uh.....keep trying.

No, no need to apologize - this is a message board, your message board. And I apologize if I sounded critical - I wasn't meaning to sound that way, just wanted to point out an issue.

And the weird issues I'm talking about aren't when the board gets hacked but simply being just plain unavailable - seriously, about half the day I get a "cannot find obner.org" message no matter what computer I check it from. Ten minutes later it works just fine. It's weird, I tell ya.

I get this also, but it's more like once every 3 or 4 days. Sometimes obner.org won't load, but obner.org/bb WILL load. Or yeah, 10 mins later, presto. It comes and goes.

Wow, I didn't realize people were experiencing these kind of problems. Other than when the whole damn thing is just down, it's always pretty smooth for me.
