I get these problems occasionally but not much more than with other websites. It doesn't seem that abnormal to me.

it probably has mostly to do with the fact that we constantly refresh this site and not others, so we notice the downtime more often.

Dudes, I so recommended this exact same thing the week Obner started. Nobody gave a shit.

I then noticed somebody had started such a site at music-wiki.org, but that site no longer exists.

yes, now that music-wiki.org no longer exists, this would be great.

Eh, it was a bad idea at the time.

Not that I'm sure it'll succeed now, but it could be fun trying.

I don't know how much you know about mediawiki, but here's the big development obstacle I see: to the software, everything's just an article. That's great for an encyclopedia, but to build a recommendation engine, we need to be able to discriminate between different types of data, i.e. artists v. albums, etc. So while the wiki model is great once you drill down to an artist's page, it doesn't work as an organization model. So I think we'd have to actually fork development and severely modify the app. Does that sound right?

I actually haven't read this whole thread, so my idea of what you guys are talking about might not be completely right.

I know Audioscrobbler is planning on providing a a great deal of web services for people to take advantage of. Think that might be helpful with the recommendations aspect of this?

I believe that Obner should stay as a posting board. The reason being is the new board pretty much sucks. It’s pretty much what it was when we all left last year. Not being able to post picture just pisses me off and in 2005 it shouldn’t be an issue. Despite all that the main reason I say this is because I really wonder how healthy CMJ is. You could shut down this site and than CMJ could disappear within months. Most of the employee’s are also long gone and CMJ owes a bunch of us money or some issues.

I hope before you shut down this board Haq that you take a vote and see how this community feels about going back for good. If, in the future, you just don’t want to deal with all the headaches that running a board entails then I’m sure there are other computer people who would be more than willing to take over for you.

Just my .02

Haq has no intentions of shutting down obner unless like 75% of us want to migrate which isnt the case. Obner is stronger and is actually gaining cred on it own merits (witness the recent influx of some good people);

Plus, the whole "CMJ will attract new people" argument, which is completely bunk anyways is moot---new people who find the CMJ board will eventually find there way here and I think the Pepsi challenge will show Obner to be better.

And Bee, not to be cheesy, but you are a part of that; even if your reviews are oftentimes long winded and over my head, shit, i still read/enjoy them. Stick around, dude.

No talk of shutting down unless it becomes totally useless, Bee. I'm just trying to think of ways to draw in new folks. This project may end up being something else entirely, but will not eclipse this BB.

NorthernSoul - any chance we could chat about this over IM?
