I thought the album that was released on the internet and held up at the label was produced by Jon Brion. Did she rerecord the songs with a new producer? Or is the one floating around also produced by Mike Elizondo?

Mike Elizondo puts his pants on the same as you and I... But then he makes Gold records.

Or, at least, acclaimed ones.

2001, Marshall Mathers LP, Get Rich or Die Tryin', Chavez Ravine, Extraordinary Machine...

Apparently Fiona wasn't happy with the version of EM that leaked. She wanted to redo a lot of it. So, in a way, we all blamed Sony. But Fiona wasn't happy with the album.

I like the version that Brion produced.

I'm glad she's got an album coming out, but I want to hear it before i buy it, now that I don't know what I'm getting into.

Part of why I dig her so much is that Jon Brion gets free reign in the producer's chair, so this potentially, and I really hate to say it... but it could potentially suck.

Yeah, I've really had this album for what feels like forever. I forgot about it, actually. And I thought it was "finished" for the longest time before being released to the net after everyone said it wasn't going to be released.

So she remastered it or something and changed some things and now it's seeing the light of day? Is it the same thing? Same tracks and everything because I loved the original release and wouldn't want to lose anything.

From Jon Brion to 50 Cent's producer? We *just* might be out of luck.

Not sure how accurate the info. is but I read on another board that she re-recorded all but 2 songs from the recordings she did with Jon Brion.

http://www.myspace.com/fionaapple to listen to a track.

It's good, but the Jon Brion version is way hipper.

The new production is safe, well, safe compared to Brion's. And it tries to cop some of his style, vibraphone, pizz. strings, but the new tempo of O'Sailor makes it feel like a waltz, and the old tempo was really almost dirgelike, which felt, i don't know... dirtier.

I'd have been happy with this if I hadn't heard the original.

Those opposed to copy-protection and/or Dualdiscs should be aware that this album is only being released as either a copy-protected disc or a DualDisc, two technologies people have shown time and time again this year that may or may not work in any number of a variety of players from high-end audiophile gear to crappy car CD players. What a crock. As much as I like the material from the leaked copy, I'll be passing this up - I don't want my money going to support either of these half-assed technologies.

I dunno, something about all of this doesn't sit right with me. I don't buy for a second that the Brion version was Alan Smithee'd by Fiona. Sounds more like convenient, "please don't drop me!" backpedaling on the part of an artist who needs to make a margin.

Yeah, cynical. What?

i'm not sure i believe that... i really liked the version that leaked, but that doesn't support my argument; rather, what is interesting, is that we first learned of this records difficulties from jon brion, who spoke about how it was finished and the label didn't like it, because it felt it couldn't market it and that it didn't have an acceptable single. up until this point fiona never complained about it publicly... suddenly it leaks and Sony realizes its best chance to make money off of an album that's being well received among those who have it is passing, they hire a commercial producer to dumb it down, and encourage fiona to start speaking about how she was displeased with the first version. the 'official' spin is that jon brion was hired to produce the demos for the album: who hires jon brion to produce demos? nobody. and who has fiona been hanging with and performing with since it became apparent the record would be released? jon brion. if fiona didn't like the work that jon did for her, i doubt she would be playing shows with him. if fiona was the one who wanted to redo the album, i imagine that jon would be pissed and not want to play shows with her. rather, the fact that they continue to appear together makes me think her label forced this upon her and is making her speak nicely about it... having spent some time in the board rooms with record and marketing execs at major labels, i can speak from personal experience that this is exactly the kind of shit they would pull...

Yeah, she did Extraordinary Machine live with Brion on guitar, and an upright bassist for that VH1/redcross/katrina/jerry's kids telethon.

It was awesome.

I highly doubt that Brion would be gigging with her anywhere if the spin the label put on it was true.

Besides, although he does the largo gig, he purportedly doesn't like touring, being in bands, or being a sideman.

He only played on the one Jellyfish album, and The Grays imploded on their first tour.

And those were projects that were "happy" with his work? So we're to believe that she's not pleased, and he's gigging with her.

Hmm.
