If you want some straight-up rock n' roll with a little venom in the lyrics, go snag a song or two from Graham Parker's recent Songs of No Consequence and see what you think. The Figgs as backing band are excellent.

The new Smog, A River Ain't Too Much to Love, is pretty solid. RIYL - Leonard Cohen, Silver Jews, and, uh, Smog.

Also, not really new music, but that new Orange Juice comp (The Glasgow School) is finally out domestically, and it's pretty cool. I'm still kinda getting into it, but's definitely grown on me more with each listen.

I will hawk him until my dying day: Matt Elliott.

RIYL...hmm...can't really compare him to anything. Late period Talk Talk, Indietronica, folk music (yes, all at the same time). His first album (The Mess We Made)will be easier to obtain until his second album (Drinking Songs) comes out domestically. Don't have the CD with me, but here. (No samples of solo stuff, but if you want to get an idea, start at the bottom of the page and work your way up.)

Wow!!

Dude needs help & help is on its way!!

Graham Coxon' s fifth CD "Happiness in Magazines" is just what you need.

You might recognize the name from that britpop group Blur; but this is something different, indeed: Stephen Street, who produced Blur's best albums produces Coxon's guitar pop in a wonderful fusion of ragged invention and sharp, tuneful songwriting. You can't go wrong & this wil break you out of your slump.

Cheers,

audiobill

...dueling Stewies

Try Ashes to Dust from William Elliot Whitmore...it folksy, bluesy stuff from one of those gruff, Marlboro-lovin voices...it's pretty stripped down, usually just him, his guitar, & a little accompaniment...I could see a Iron & Wine person digging it, even though it's not really the same thing

I think we should sticky this thread... there is too much good advice to take in all at once.

Great suggestion, Max.

Now, how do we go about "stickying" this one.

One more for ya, all:

Grey Delisle's The Graceful Ghost

If you like a country gothic sound that feels like an irish mountain combo of Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris with a twist of Cowboy Junkies you should like her. For what it's worth....... Allmusic says, " Her songs, all of them, offer visions of romantic loss and longing, sin and redemption."

What a voice & what lyrics.

Cheers,

audiobill

I would second that Micah P. Hinson joint. It's very good with some whiskey.

You really ought to check out some John Fahey, specifically any album with "Death" in the title. I'll gladly sort you out.

And if you're still not listening to much Six Organs, I'd rerecommend you do so.

How's the Animal Collective?

Phaser, Sway -- side one of Meddle era Pink Floyd crossed with Talk Talk, mixed with Blur's sense of commercial appeal...completely under-rated album.

I really liked "Bloody Bucket", but the rest was too country for me (although, for the cover, that was a good thing, as it made it an interesting cover).

RIYL Jim White, et al.

Actually, the Riyl to Jim White is a good one, Dusty.

You wouldn't like Delisle, knowing you. But man if you dig twang or not, what a voice.

Cheers,
Bill

I went looking for this, and it was already halfway down the second page.

So consider this a bump.

The new album by Koufax is decent. Not as good as their earlier stuff though.

I've played it pretty safe with my music lately - almost all of my favorite artists released albums this year, so I haven't had tons of motivation to branch out which means I'm just listening to the same stuff I always do. Most played this year: Okkervil River, Decemberists, Iron and Wine, Sufjan, Sigur Ros, etc.

If you'd be so kind, recommend stuff from 2005 that is different from these (and if you know me well enough, different from the other stuff I ordinarily listen to) but that has broad enough appeal that I can ease my way out of the rut instead of jumping straight into, like, Autechre.

M. Ward - Transistor Radio or Black Mountain - s/t or Beck - Guero
