Other than Amoeba, of course, are there any music shops worth visiting?

Also, just how good is Amoeba? I'm going soon but I want to know what to look out for ahead of time.

I've heard about the selection, but how are the prices? Somewhere I read about a huge clearance section, but is it just full of shitty albums, or...?

why don't you just go and find out? then when you walk out with your tonnage, you can decide if you need to go to groove merchant and/or streetlight.

Yep. Why would you want to go anywhere else? It is the first and last record store you need in S.F. Period.

My wife says I was like a kid in a candy store bouncing around. We went back 3 times wile I was in SF. She came up with a plan.
Focus on Vinyl, then used CDs, then the markdown bin. I had to ship stuff home.

Oh what fond memories

One half of Tia and Tamara wouldn't like that too much, if you know what I mean.

Maybe if she wasn't an asshole you could be going with me this morning.

haha her name is Tamara. Yeah, I know. She hates you, however I could have pretended to get abducted by a hairy fat pedophile. I would make phone calls from pay phones all over the place, scaring the shit out of her, and then I would miraculously show up home, alive, with tons of new cds from Amoeba and San Francisco shit. I don't think that would work either.

Damnit. I'LL GO TO PLAN 9 TODAY. I bet you're jealous now.

You may have to mow the lawn to make up for the search

You should swing by Aquarius in the Mission. IT's really an amazing little store. Sort of reminiscent of Other Music in NEw York, in that its a pretty small selection but very well curated with awesome writeups taped to most things. Their weekly email on new releases is probably my favorite source for music reviews although they can be abit heavy on swedish death metal releases sometimes. While you're down there, you should check out 826 Valencia which is the Believer/McSweeneys storefront. ITs all pirate themed and kind of interesting. Theres a weird store next door to it with dioramas made with taxidermied mice and weird garden stuff. I can't really explain it, but like I said its pretty idiosynchratic and worth poking your head into.

There are a couple of other good record stores just off Haight Street whose names are escaping me right now... There was one place across from the old Church of Coltrane that had some great old vinyl.

There used to be a good IDM store in Berkely proper -- it had a rhyme or alliteration in its name...is that still there? Monster Madness or Night Flight or something like that.

The Berkeley location is practically in my backyard and I frequent the store quite regularly. But the SF store has so much more to offer. I'm curious why you like it more? Both locations have their fair share of smelly people our front so that couldn't be it.

'Rather Ripped Records' had the best collection of bootlegs. EVER.

Amoeba is going to blow your mind:

Image

When I was in SF a month ago I got stuff like Spoon Gimmie Fiction for 6.95 and some Cure deluxe editions for 16.99 each.

As for others? Try Street Light, Rasputin, or Virgin (might be the best one in this country).

San Francisco store is by far the best of all the Amoeba’s (Former SF resident for seven years, (before 3 years) SF store days).

Ameoba in Berkley is best. The prices are awesome. Their used stuff is out of control. Their bargain bins are overflowing and will take you days to sort thru. Streetside (also has tons of bargain bin stuff on the floor, at least in the Santa Cruz store) and Rasputin are good too. Rasputin puts out a magazine which is worth reading too. The one my brother snags for me is their best the year of issue.

I want to record shop so bad.

Judging from that picture I feel it's safe to say nothing in NYC compares.

NYC doesn't have that much real estate. It would have to be a 10 story music store where each floor is 8'x8' with a spiral stair in the middle. haha

i need to get out of architecture.
