It was totally a stab at hip hop. The Clash were very interested in early hip hop, even touring with grafatti artists working behind them at one point.

Still, for my money, I prefered their next rap attempt, Radio Clash.

I agree...I've still got my "Radio Clash" 12" single with 4 different mixes on it.

there was a bit of discussion about the clash crossing over with hip-hop in this book called "last night a dj saved my life: the history of the disc jockey." something to do with the clash performing at a club in NY where afrika bambaata was spinnin' and the whole rock/b-boy scene intertwined... forgot the details of it all, but i'll look it up.

Yeah, I've got a video of The Clash being interviewed by Tom Snyder(!) and then they perform a few songs -Radio Clash and something else - while a grafitti artist spray paints a backdrop. This was during the Bonds fiasco.
