Terror Kitsch Performance Body Slammed

Washington City Paper's Dave McKenna reports that World Wrsetling Entertainment (WWE) is canceling a much-hyped bout on the upcoming SummerSlam extravaganza at Washington's MCI Center. It seems that the WWE's first post-9/11 Islamic terrorist character is flopping. The character, Muhammad Hassan--who is played in reality by Italian-American named Mark Copani--has been an abiding source of controversy since he was introduced last fall. But his performance on the night of the July 7 attacks on the London mass transit system is what prompted the decision to yank him:

On a Smackdown episode that was broadcast nationally on the very night of the train and bus bombings, Hassan ordered his sidekick [Khosrow Daivari] into the ring to face the much bigger, meaner wrestler known as the Undertaker. Hassan convinced Daivari that he needed to be sacrificed "for the greater good."
While the Undertaker was pounding most of the life out of Daivari (wink wink), Hassan led a crew dressed in matching al-Qaeda-looking outfits into the ring and garroted the Undertaker with wire. Hassan and his cellmates then carried Daivari’s prone body out of the arena over their heads, martyr-style.

McKenna interviewed former Husker Du/Sugar frontman Bob Mould--who has famously toiled as a writer for World Championship Wrestling--on Hassan's dismissal. Mould expressed sympathy for Copani, and mainly blamed WWE promoter extraordinaire Vince McMahon: "Vince was just stubborn on this one and didn’t edit out . . . the scenes with the piano wire, even though he had enough time to do that. They didn’t need to show that on that night."

We understand that Copani will be hanging around DC after SummerSlam is over, though. He's angling for a shot at opening for Clint Black on the America Supports You Freedom Walk Mall Concert. --HOLLY MARTINS

Huh?

I understand that Msr Mould is a homosexual, so from that, an abiding interest in wrestling, even advancing so far as to make a paycheck out of it, is to be expected. But, the man is also an indie-rocker. And say what one will about the blue-collar, ram-shackle touches of Husker Du and the sundry and various other MPLS rock/punk bands of the early to mid eighties, but, come on... Certainly, indie-rock should trump ghey, and prevent Mould from WWF/WWE fandom.

That is weird. If I would have stumbled on to that story anywhere but here I would have spit up whatever I was drinking.

Bob's not an indie rocker. He's an aging modern rocker. It's like comparing a a triceratops to a horned puffin because they both have horns.

Man, am I ever confused.

Horn: One of the hard, usually permanent structures projecting from the head of certain mammals, such as cattle, sheep, goats, or antelopes, consisting of a bony core covered with a sheath of keratinous material.

Just because a horned puffin has h-o-r-n in its name does not mean it has a horn.

Maybe a flugelhorn would work better, or a horny old never-was, or the Matterhorn.

Damnit, I was about to say the same thing. Anyone over 12 who watches wrestling is an idiot. Same for those Entertainment Tonight! style shows, third-rate reality TV shows, World's Scariest blah blah shockfests, and non-insomnia induced infomercials.

That's quite true. The original plans were to have him challenge Batista for the World title at Summerslam but they nixed that when UPN told them they didn't want Hassan on their tv show at all anymore.

I've never understood why Bob Mould likes wrestling.

Or, anyone over the age of 10.
