i think that the reason i don't like Spoon, and the reason that all his songs sound half-finished to me, is that the drums are always terrible at best. it's almost like he hates his drummer and wants to relegate him to the status if the guitar player in a ska band where he's been given one thing to play and that's all he'll ever be allowed to do.

I actually think Jim Eno is what makes Spoon good. He gives each song a great, bouncy feel that fit the songs well. I don't think Spoon would be half as good with a different drummer.

2 songs in playing backwards, and it already sounds better this way.

I can't believe this is actually true. I love this album the way it is but I may have to give this a shot.

I think Eno is one of the best drummers going...he creates so much space in the songs and is a metronome, to boot.

Yeah, "I was in this Drop-D Metal band called Requiem" is a really frockin' good line.

Yeah, no doubt. One of my favorite songs of the year. The line, "I can't relax with my knees on the floor and a stick in my back" is simply brilliant.

Just finishing it backwards now. Could this be why he recaps a few of the songs in "The Beast and Dragon, Adored?" That would make sense: "I been watching my friends move away / I summon my love back to me / And I went down by the seawall / That's when I knew, knew They Never Got You."

It's also track #6 regardless of which direction you play the album in.

I'm listening in reverse order right now. Through three songs, I think it sounds ok this way but saying this is what was intended by the band seems like a stretch to me.

I listened to about half of it backwards today. For some reason, it seems like it was a lot longer. Also, I think that with the original sequencing of the album, a couple of songs near the end weren't as strong as the beginning half of it. Listening to it backwards, you get those few songs out of the way first and IMO the album gets stronger as you make your way through it.

Sorry, CG...you know I love ya, man...but if your head was any further up on this one, you'd be close enough to your heart to play it like a set of bagpipes.

Gimme Fiction, along with the other Spoon albums, is flat-out awful. There's not one song on it that I can enjoy, or even listen to.

Ya know, there may actually be something to this.

BTW, are you guys aware of the intentional mis-sequencing of The Pixies' "Trompe Le Monde? I had forgot about it but was reminded when I mentioned this Gimme Fiction thingy.

Well the album is a concept album based on an alien landing on earth and the number "43".

The thing is that the album sequencing is not chronological with the events of the story.

If I figure it out again (honestly, we did this in like 1992 when we all smoked a lot of dope and had plenty of time on our hands) I'll post the chronological track order.

Is this another Pixies-fan rumor in the way that this Spoon one is, or...?
