THE LIFE AQUATIC with Steve Zissou

I think its quite brilliant and at least >or= Tennenbaums.

Anyway, I dug it and bought the movie after seeing it and it gets better after every viewing.

Honestly, I thought it was one of the worst movies I've seen in my life. And I'm a big Wes Anderson fan.

I really wanted to like it, but not one second of it interested me in the least.

Edit: I have a feeling Rushmore will always be his crowning achievement.

I liked it as least as much as Tenenbaum's and almost as much as Rushmore.

I loved it in theatres. Second viewing didn't yield any newer appreciation.

I think it is spectacular. Tennenbaums felt a little ponderous and over-reaching for me, and I love every nuance of Murray's performance. I even love the action pieces, which some balked at.

Here's a question: Do any of you dig Lost in Translation but hate Steve Zissou? They push the same buttons for me.

And the soundtrack is cool.

Wait! You're contradicting MNSAA? I'm at a loss.

Dalen is to Jerry, George and Kramer what MNSAA is to Kevin, Gene and Feldman.

a)Tthe actions were hilarious. b)I liked both movies. Murray's deadpan is obvious but his character is noticeably different. Pathetic but survivalist in The Life.

DeFoe as Klaus was genius funny to me.

Willem Defoe is awesome.

I rented and watched this just last night. I must say the humor was way lower than I expected. I love the bank stooge rescue scene. The music was awesome.

Love it. I appreciate it more with each viewing and think the final scene with the shark is beautiful and heartbreaking. Love the Sigur Ros during that scene.

Highly rewatchable for me. #2 behind Rushmore in the Wes A library.

It's a grower.

I've only seen it once and thoroughly enjoyed it. I disagree that Murray was genious -- that's just his doddering old style. But for some reason, it worked in this "mockumentary". I like how they played the action sequences as dream sequences; I like how they overexposed the film to give it that Cousteau look; I like how they never explain his relationship to the Owen Wilson character; I like what's-her-name's performance as the journalist/pregnant woman/etc.; casting Defoe was brilliant beyond words, he played that part perfect.

Agreed, Dafoe was good but other than a few scenes this movie didn't do much for me. Murray seems to be phoning in his acting these days. Ditto for Lost In Translation.

I loved Rushmore though, what a great film.

Yes. I think Lost in Translation is great. Not a fan of Life Aquatic at all. I like Rushmore a lot. Don't care for Tennebaums. Bottle Rocket I saw so long ago I can't remember.

I'm pretty sure they said Ned was most likely the son of Zissou like a hundred times.

But he wasn't. "Zissou shoots blanks."

I like it about as much as the other Anderson movies and for pretty much the same reasons. I never really cared much about the characters in Rushmore or Royal Tenenbaums, either. My enjoyment in his movies has always been mainly aesthetic. I just like the fantasy worlds he creates, his insane attention to visual detail, and his sense of timing.

I didn't like this one at all in theatre's but it could probably grow on me with more viewings in the same way that RT did.

I just finished watching The Royal Tennebaums and Lost in Translation this weekend. I love them both, but have yet to see The Life Acquatic. I will rectify this soon, I think I might just buy the dvd if I can find it at reasonable price. I never saw Bottle Rocket and I didn't really care for that much for Rushmore the first time I saw it. I probably need to see it again.

But it never said when he began shooting them. I thought his wife said it might have been caused by all his underwater ventures, but Steve said he knew about Ned from the beginning, and saved his letter all these years because he was his son. He never wanted him to call him dad, because he never wanted to be a father.

Yeah, but then they introduce some doubt -- and I think the casting of someone who doesn't look anything like Murray was purposeful. Anyway, my point is not that they don't try to say it, but that the movie ends without it being fully resolved.
