Seriously...
The Apple Venus records could've been so much better with him still on the axe.

Not that there's anything wrong with them, as is. I'm just sayin...

That's who I thought they were talking about in Loogar's thread! I clicked on it, got some dumb sports thread and thought "Hey! What about the NMR heading, dipshit?"

Question- can you read what's on the guy's shirt in my avatar?

I don't see how they could have possibly made AV any better than it already is. Seriously, one of the most perfect albums I own (except for "Fruit Nut" and "Frivolous Tonight," which don't really fit the album at all. I like them as songs, but they just don't belong.)

Listened to Skylarking today, still can't get into it. Drums and Wires is a great record, haven't like anything else by them.

Yeah- me too, along with "English Settlement."

Hey, has anyone heard their "Homegrown" disc? It's a bunch of demos they've done over the years. Couple of pretty good things on there, here's a link: http://www.djangomusic.com/item_music.a ... mediatype=

I had it (and the Apple Venus V1 companion, Homespun, but found it almost entirely unnecessary because most of the versions were so similar to the end-product that I never listened to it. So I sold it. But I do think the Fuzzy Warbles are completely worth every penny I've invested in the 6 discs that have been released so far. If you're a big XTC fan, they're really fun to listen to and much of the material varies quite a bit from the finished product. Some of the unreleased songs are absolutely great, you'll find yourself shaking your head in disbelief they were left off the albums they were recorded for. Even the Coat of Many Cupboards box has a bunch of unreleased stuff on it (that is not duplicated on the Warbles) that is great.

That Homespun stuff is indeed unecessary. It is sick how fully realized Andy Partidge's songs are even in demo form. All the orchestral stuff is already thought out. Just the tones are better on the studio version.

I think it's no coincidence that the first total non-Gregory album, Wasp Star, was so flat. Much of what goes into an XTC song may already be present in Andy's demoes, but I think Dave Gregory brought more than just chops to the table.
