The IPod rates the 2nd lowest (out of 4 devices tested).

From the SF Chronicle. I hear there are popups, but I don't see them. Thanks, Google.

Thanks for the article finchy. I don't know whether to jump into this MP3 game or wait (until Christmas/post-Christmas).

I'm not sure about the quality of MP3 sound. Has it improved, at all?

You're welcome. I dunno about the sound- they say "great sound" in one review, but what are they comparing it to, ya know? A good stereo, or a great 8-Track player?

I've found that if you rip your MP3s at a decent bitrate (192+, LAME, VBR of some sort), then get yourself a decent pair of headphones (Sennheiser PX-100 for me) then it will sound just fine.

The lack of a screen would kill any interest for me. It just seems asinine to not be able to see what's on. Maybe it's just me, but if Itunes is picking stuff out randomly from the 85gb of mp3s I have at home, I'm not necessarily going to remember what everything is.

I guess these flash-based players serve a purpose, but they seem far too limited in storage to make much sense to me. Maybe if I only had like 30 CDs, then it might make some sense. The only plus I see is that you don't have to worry about hurting a fragile hard drive.

Yeah boy. I have a little Samsung 1 GB player that's about the size of a tube of lipstick that I use for exercising or short trips to say, the grocery store or something. I can keep 10-12 albums on it at a time, and it runs for a good while on 1 AA battery.

I have my Karma hooked up to my stereo so that I don't have to fumble and hunt for cds I left at work or in the car.

This is a consideration for me. I love to workout to music. Currently, I have old-school long-life Sony Cd player with something called atrac( I think??).
It does not skip, but is becoming rather bulky in light of what "lipstick tubed" mp3players are out there.

So, I guess if I make the transition it will have to be a)an ipod 40+ and b)a smaller device.

Good to hear that there are bitrates that offer improved sound.

Thanks obners,

audiobill
