Andy Votel and Gruff Rhys put together a killer fucking mix. Say what you will about the Welsh, but they've always made interesting music. If compilations qualified for album of the year, this would be mine.

Seek it out: http://finderskeepersrecords.com/discog_welsh.html ; http://www.finderskeepersrecords.com/press_welsh.html

Quote:
All back to Furryland for some Welsh weirdness. Considering the fact that most of these 'Under The Influence'-type celebrity mix CDs are actually compiled by stylists and managers, there's something refreshing about Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys' obsession with the stoned sounds of '70s Wales. This idiosyncratic array of prog rock funky drumbeats and fuzzed-up pop will confuse those who think that Welsh music only consists of male vocal choirs and eisteddfods. From the handclaps and acoustic la-la-la stomps of Meic Stevens' 'Y Brawd Houdini' to the gentle outer-space folk of Huw Jones' 'Dwr' or the swirling prog dynamics of Edward H Dafis' 'Calan Gaef', 'Welsh Rare Beat' demonstrates that Wales was full of freaked-out weirdos long before Rhys's band formed. In a sea of blando compilations, it's an essential purchase which gives a unique insight into the strange pop-art experiment that is Super Furry Gruff's brain. Classic. 9/10"

I'd be interested in this if you have it on your computer. Know how to PM a YSI?

That sounds dorkier than I thought.

I will reciprocate with something if you're interested.<-----Not an offer for a reach-around.

wow, now looks who's influenced by NME.

the only reason this comp. is getting attention is because votel and rhys are invloved. a few of the tunes are qual, but the compilation overall is spotty.

my picks from it:

Huw Jones - Mathonwy [sounds like a Welsh Bowie]
Elleri Llwyd - Hwiangerdd [nice acoustic track]
Yr Atgyfodiad - Cynnwrf Yn Ein Gwlad [i dig the guitar on this]
Heather Jones - Nos Ddu [dig the guitar on this as well, very Clapton circa Cream]
Edward H. Dafis - Calan Gaeaf [best track on this comp.]
Y Tebot Piws - Mae Rhywyn Wedi Dwyn Fy Nhrwyn [very Zeppelin, and i sampled the drums from this ages ago]

I kinda like this so far. Some of the tracks make me feel like I'm in the movie Legend, and I don't think that's good.

I'm influenced by the NME because I grabbed a review off the Finders Keepers site that would most likely grab people's interest? I see nothing wrong with that review, mind you.

Since I'm such a big fan of Gruff, SFA, Finders Keepers, and Welsh music, it wasn't hard for me to pick up on the album. I'm glad you like some tracks at least. "Y Brawd Houdini" has been a personal favourite of mine for a few years now. Meic Stevens is a great, overlooked folk musician.
