Unless you have a microwave, you're gonna be eating stuff that gives you a shitload of gas.

I'm riding my bike to work until the snow sets in.

Heh, you sound like my husband. He loves the money he saves by not driving into work and riding his bike instead.

I can top all of those consumption figures on my $300 1982 motorcycle, which clocks in at about 60mpg. I cannot, however, carry anything non-backpackable, and I almost froze a testicle off this morning because i only wore one pair of pants (and summer is apparently over here, with highs in the low 80's, morning temps in the mid 50's).

But still. At $2.69 a gallon, $5 fills me up and gets me 150 miles. Plus I'm sexy on it.

Not two weeks ago it was 90's highs, and more importantly high 60's in the morning, when I have to ride a motorcycle and a bicycle to go to school. The change is palpable. Leaves are beginning to fall. One coat doesn't cut it in the cycle anymore anytime before 11am.

Tomorrow on your way to work, roll down the window and ride there with your head hanging out. You'll see what I'm talking about. It sneaks up on you.

Keep your eyes peeled up there for bikes, I think I'm gonna be in the market for one, come late Sept. or afterwards...

It'd be a good excuse to come up to Madison. Pretend your price range is my price range.

Then we'll go to some gee-tar shops.

Right, but that was the point of the Wired article. The EPA uses a less than practical way of measuring gas mileage that doesn't translate to real world use.

$2.50 for gas? Our is at $2.70 as of this morning.

I have a 2004 Malibu with a 16 gallon tank (I think) and I usually only fill up about twice a month to the tune of $30-35, assuming I don't do any all over the damn county runs dropping things off to printers and such.

I still think that if a person buys a vehicle classified as a "truck"--light or otherwise, they should require a truck drivers license, and pay an appropriately higher truck registration fee. They should adhere to truck traffic regulations, and pay truck level penalties--including forfeiture of truck priveleges--just like a CDL.

That's completely moronic. I would have had to get a special license for the little, tiny Ford Ranger I used to drive? The truck that regularly got 25 mpg? Are you kidding? Just because I needed something to haul lumber and trees and other large items around I need to pay more and get a special license? Just because YOU don't see a reason why non-commercial people would need a truck doesn't mean there aren't legitimate reasonse why a non-commercial driver would want/need a truck. I MISS having a truck because I have to resort to convoluted means in order to get big items home now. You tell me how much help the environment's gotten when I have to have Home frickin' Depot drive their gigantic nasty-ass exhaust spewin' flatbed truck out to my house when I get a sheet of plywood. Do you REALLY think this stupid license idea of yours is going to help? Please tell me you were just really tired when you wrote that.

My receipt from this morning: 24.166G @ $2.64.9 = $64.02

And when/if Ford makes a hybrid F-150 with enough power to pull my work trailer bash the fuck out of things, I'll be very open to buying it.

Until then, fuck it. Get out of my way potential carjackers and soccer moms alike.

The Chevy Silverado hybrid has two outlets in the back, so you can run a refrigerator and a saw or some shit off of it. Pretty pricey though.

Someone didn't read the follow-up post.

In summary--a special license (and training) should be required for larger-than-car vehicles--mass, height, and volume.
