OK, I love these guys. I don't really care about their schtick, hype, whatever. Musically, I think this is great, catchy, southern rock. And I love the vocals. Why do people have such a problem with these guys?

Yeah, PopTodd started a topic about them recently which didn't exactly get an enthusiastic response.

I like 'em.

Are your referring to the pitchfork review of the new one today? If so, I think its just haterism, b/c Youth and Young Manhood and the EP are fucking tight to death.

The PF review inspired this thread, but I seem to see a lot of haterism across the board. I can never figure it out. Did being compared to the Strokes from the get go ruin their credibility?

I was listening to Aha Shake Heartbreak today and it's a really great album, probably would be top 10 2004 (for me) if it was released this year.

I really don't understand the hate-on most have for them either. What is it mostly: Is it the Ramone-esque names? The temporal association with the Strokes/Vines/Hives? The Southern connection? I don't get it. I can see not liking it because its just not your bag, but the venom that gets spit is unfathomable.

i saw them on some talk show, probably "late night", after that first album came out and i was very underwhelmed. i also felt this about drive-by truckers, but finally was turned onto them in the last year.

From the new one

King of the Rodeo

Soft
Day Old Blue
Where Nobody Knows

are a bit more of a departure from the last record

Pistol of Fire is straight up catchy CCR style rock

I loved their debut EP, but never checked out their full length because I felt I might not like an entire album of their. The hype also caused me to avoid the album. I didn't want to be led into a huge disappointment.

I might check out more of their songs eventually.

Youth & Young manhood was one of my favorite 2003 releases. Looking forward to hearing the new one.

Yes. Vox is the separation for me.

The new one is vastly superior to the first. Some really cool and inventive bass lines and rythym section work. A mid 60's vibe mixed in with the southern rock influences in a Who, Faces, Stones kind of way. The second song soundsl like Built To Spill, musically.
