So I know we've had some threads about cool cover art, but I can't recall there ever being one about the artists that do them. Whose work is consistently cool, etc.

Anyone pay any attention to it? I don't know any current artists doing it. I suspect the importance of it has diminished as CD's have taken over as the bigger format.

Some of my favorites are:

Rogério Duarte and Helio Oitacica were responsible for most of the tropicalia covers.

Here's what Duarte said about their covers:

Quote:
Our album covers represent Brazil itself: all its conflicts and joys, all its milk and cocoa, all its naked girls and starving children in the streets, all its richness and misery! Latin America: the third world wailing in front of the gates of the first world

Here's some of their famous covers:

There's a whole book devoted to the nearly 400 covers that Reid Miles created for Blue Note:

Such as:

Anyone have any other favorites?

Heh. I took Beck's Guero out from the library today and the librarian apologized as she looked through the insert to get the name of the guy who did the artwork-Marcel Dzama (I think)

Dave McKean (Stabbing Westward, Fear Factory, Front Line Assembly)

There's also one or two people that have a tendency to have that same multiple media look (photos, sculpture, paint, etc.). Eric something? I have it written down somewhere...and some chick...I bought her empty cassette covers just so that I could find out who did it...

Tsunehisa Kimura -- did the covers for Paul Schutze' Site Anubis and the more famous Midnight Oil, Red Sails in the Sunset, as well as others.

Oh, and the guy from Hipgnosis, who did a lot of the famous Pink Floyd covers, is still at work -- he does, for example, Dream Theater's, Alan Parson's and the Cranberries' album covers.

I believe they did one, if not both, of The Mars Volta covers, which I thought were at least interesting.

I love the Dead Kennedys cd booklets. Winston Smith does the covers while both Winston and Jello do the inserts.
Tom Waits' Rain Dogs album cover is one of my favorites. The photograph was taken by Anders Petersen.

Tony Fitzpatrick has done the last 6 or so illustrations for Steve Earle.

I don't know what else she has done other than CSNY's So Far, but I enjoy Joni Mitchell's style. I have an old copy of RS with an illustration of Neil Young that she did. Of her work I've seen, it's nothing out of this world, but it always makes me look and it's instantly recognizable.

Also, the other artwork from Okkervil River's Black Sheep Boy is awesome, but I can't find pictures of it.
