I didn't realize that N.O got hit so hard. The inital reports I was hearing was that there weren't any breaches in the levees and that only parts of the city had 6ft< of water. I just read that half the city is now under 20ft of water.

Two levees broke overnight. Also, some of the residential neighborhoods east of the city were submerged up to and over the roofs.

Probably there were lots of people who re-entered the areas that only had wind damage or a little water thinking they could start cleanup and then got trapped after the Lake poured through.

I am now about to head back to Mobile, and I am gonna be PISSED if I have to miss the fucking Real World tonite.

It's all about perspective, sure some dumb rednecks and some people not smart enough to build a city above sea level lost everything, but I can't watch cable, so this is now a tragedy in my mind.

So the third one caused the 9th to flood under? It looks pretty awful there.

Two lakefront and one from a canal over by the 9th Ward, I think. That's not counting the shit that just going over.

They are going to drop 3000# sandbags from helichopters to help slow the flow of water through the breaches.

They shoulda done like the 1927 flood and just fucking blown the levees that would flood the other side of the Mississippi (though I don't guess that is possible, given the physics, this time.

So do you rebuild or abandon N.O. after all is said and done? I can't see too many people rebuilding 6ft below sea level with threats of hurricanes destroying everything again every year. Then again, people rebuild after earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunami's all the time. This seems different though with the threat of flood.

some of the areas that were flooded looked to be in pretty bad shape even before the flooding. might be time for some urban redevelopment.

A friend of the family is an insurance claims adjuster, and he's trying to find a way down there today so he can start doing his job. He's not your run of the mill insurance guy either, rather he specializes in huge commercial buildings and apartment complexes. When the WTC towers came down, he was up there for months. He said that the state/city will just end up condemning everything, because it's the easier and more sanitary way to really go about it. Rather than trying to sort it all out, they will just give in and start again from scratch.

Billions of dollars will flow into the city, let's hope some good comes of it.

Turns out co-worker's dad was working as a chef in the French Quarter. Her grandmother heard from him last night by cellphone. He was moving to the top floor of a hotel and carrying his cat when he called. They haven't heard from him today, which isn't suprising given what's happened today.

I just want to know how long those idiots are going to be stuck in the Superdome. I heard the conditions in there were terrible but it can't be any worse than a trailer park, right?

Probably for a while. I just saw some current photos and since the last levee broke the Superdome is completely surrounded by water.

Canal St. is literally a canal right now wit 3-5 feet of water running down it. If you've never been there Canal is one of the main arteries in downtown New Orleans.

Scary stuff.

It sucks that there's actually an argument going on over all this.

I feel awful for the cities that were destroyed in the path of the Hurricane.

Imagine having lost all your belongings, and more then possibly, your family members and friends-then finding out you have no place to go and live for god knows how long.

I've only been to a small town in Mississippi as a stopover on my way to NO back when I was 22. And I've always loved and been fascinated by New Orleans, so I'm horribly sad over all of this. I look at the pictures on the net or see the news and I find myself crying last couple days.

Fuck the mayor, so he made a dumbass choice of words. He wasn't thinking. I'd rather focus on what I can do to help the people rather then bitch about or think about what that man said.

As soon as I figure out where to send it, I'm sending a donation in to help out.
