So, I am cleaning house and reorganizing the Cd's, and I am seeking opinions...
For You: Do comps go in a seperate section, does classical get filed alpha & seperate from pop? (Bach next to Bauhaus...?)
Do solo projects get filed under the artist's name, or close to the original band ( Is it "S" for Spearhead or "F" for Micheal Franti)
This is a debate here at the Beachy house, the wife being a strict follower of alpha rule, me being a bit more organic.
thoughts....am I losing it?

01: Comps go in a separate section

02: I don't own classical, but if I did, it would probably go in a separate section as well.

03: Solo works go under artist's name.

Here is what I do:
01: Comps go in a separate section
Then seperate sections for
Truibutes
Soundtracks
Label Samplers
Plain old comps

02: Classical separate section as well.

03: Solo works go under artist's name.

K, so...where does Mermaid Avenue go? Under B or next to the other Wilco?

A: Under Wilco (for me, but not based on strict A-Z) see, I'm losing it.

Comps and soundtracks at the end.

Classical separate.

Jazz separate.

Comedy separate.

Solo and side projects filed under the original band. I file The Police under "S" for Strontium 90.

Bands beginning with a number filed up front.

BRAGG, Billy.

Partly because his name comes first and partly because I like him more.

I am so doing this for once (entropy is the usual organizational style)
Elvis, yer the authority right now, how about DJ's (Shadow, Krush, etc.) all under D, then alpha?

I make my filing simple by buying only simply named albums, apparently.

Uhhh, for DJs I think I would follow your suggestion.

compilations are at the end of my collection. everything else is alphabetical, regardless of genre. (johann strauss is between the stranglers and stray cats.) solo albums are under the person's name. mermaid avenue is under bragg. dj shadow is in the Ds. this is also how i prefer my record stores.

File them by label, then release #.

You'll never find anything, but your shelves will look cool.

i may actually file my cds by spine color when i move again. that'd look pretty cool. there's no way i could do that with the records, though.

What is this "organization" of which you speak?

No, seriously:

Comps go either at end or at beginning, unless it's the Risky Business soundtrack, which goes under Tangerine Dream.

Classical goes somewhere else -- like out where guests can see them. Unless the only classical you own is Philip Glass, in which case, feel free to mix it in under G.

Genesis goes under G for Genesis, Peter goes under G for Gabriel, Phil goes under C for crap (except for the first two albums).

Collaborations go under the more important artist -- for example, Bass Terror goes under Laswell, not Bullen (for me, anyway -- I like the Bullen side, but I got it for Laswell). Don't ask me about Death Cube K -- I've got all my Subharmonic CD's separate, because their spines make a picture when put together. It has since become more of a Buckethead thing, so I put the rest under D (for Death Cube K). Songs for Drella -- flip a coin. I tend to put the one that was listed first.

You could always put an index card in all alternate locations indicating the actual location. (E.G. under compilations, where Risky Business should be, you could put an index card saying "Risky Business -- under Tangerine Dream".) Or if you keep an online database, you could keep a separate column for their order. So the first four Peter Gabriel albums would be GabrielPeter1 GabrielPeter2 GabrielPeter3 and GabrielPeter4, and if you since pick up "Ein Deutsches Album", you could make it GabrielPeter3.5.

I like these two ideas, too.

Here's some more reading for you:

http://obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=9359&highlight=alphabetical

I tend to lump compliations in with everything else. Granted, I don't have all that many but for me, Lost in Translation soundtrack goes under "L." If you're talking about free promo-type compliations, such as those given out by labels to promote their artists, I don't even put those in the same cabinet. They go in a shoe box because I don't have room on my CD shelves for them.

I'm done now, and I put Axiom Funk under A, Material under M and Imaginary Cuba under L....

I put everything under S, so I can find it, but left the disposibles under D, so we're cool, there. Honestly, I only have one disc of micheal's (Live at the Baobab) that isn't credited to Spearhead.

do I split up the Caribou albums from the Manitobas? The JSBX from the BX?

Do I split up King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn from MF Doom? The Dr. Dooom from Black elvis? what the fuck do I do there?

Maybe one could start arrangements based on Geography, add Boards of Canada, the secret stash of old Brian Adams...

of course now I have to move Karsh Kale to a new zone with the bollywood comps..........

About a year ago I actually re-organized all my CD's in to seperate genre's which was no small job and it actually turned out to be a disaster.

I couldn't find anything after the change and I ended up putting it back to a one huge A - Z with comps at the end.

Keeping it simple is the best way.

that's almost exactly what happened with me. Genre mixing is always a bad idea because there's always some album or another sblurring the distinctions between certain genres and you file it in one and then always look for it in the other. wow that's a headache I don't want to revisit.
