This may be the worst or may be the perfect time to ask this, but.....

Why in the world do people live in that section of the country? Seriously. Isn't it a given that three months of the year you're going to be besieged by crazy storms and such? I just can't understand why someone would choose to live in Tornado Alley or the Gulf region.

Someone please explain.

there's the potential for a natural disaster pretty much anywhere. southeast - hurricanes. midwest - tornados. west coast - earthquakes. east coast - scabies.

Actually when I'm freezing to death in January and February or sitting at home with frostbite, I wonder the same thing about living up here. Why would anyone choose to live here? Isn't there plenty of room down around the equator? Africa seems largely unpopulated in parts.

Well, I would point not to the pieces of garbage that are looting on TV but the hundreds of thousands of hardworking, tax paying, blue collar Americans who live in that area. They are the people who provide you with the gas for your home and car and who take care of you when you come to town and visit and many of them have been there for generations.

Also, its their home.

Its kind of like asking why someone would live in NYC when people are flying planes into buildings and the threat of a poison gas attack on the subway or an outbreak is always only seconds away---you live there b/c its where you live.

Also, I havent noticed many people migrating from South to North in this country. I think there may be something behind that.

Potential. Yes. I live in Seattle where there's a chance of earthquake and Mt. Rainier is right outside. But it's all about frequency and probability. We rarely (never) get earthquakes and it doesn't seem like Rainier is going to go any time soon. BUT it is a certainty that some crazy storm is going to come and wreck me every summer if I live in FL, GA, MS, etc...

I think MI is Michigan... MS?

Let's see: Or there's the threat of blizzards at least once or twice a winter in Chicago and other northern states.

And yet, our summers are hot as fuck and people die all over the city because of them.

Gee...it's called weather. It's everywhere.

Any place called land is always going to be a target for mother nature's PMS. Get over it.

Moving on now...

See the trouble with this analogy is that people don't fly planes into buildings every year or so. I'm not saying this shit happens on this level all the time in Louisiana, but I don't understand why anyone would live in Florida after last summer. That shit happened like once a week.

I asked myself a similar question...why would anyone choose to live in a city below sea level (or at least damn near it) when the threat of natural disaster seems to be inordinately high. Yeah, I get that it's their home and all.

History. Culture. Family.

Things like that tend to be the reason. The city had it's shitty areas but much of it was rather beautiful and steeped in history. I always wanted to move there just for that reason.

And I don't believe that the threats were always there. I believe the city has actually sunk further in the past 100 years. So the threat became more ready.

To echo what everyone else is saying:

Shit happens everywhere.

Example:

In Chicago in 1996 over 800 people died from heat stroke due to a 10 day heat wave of 100+ degree weather.

I don't think all the heat waves or blizzards in the history of chicago have ever contributed to close the numbers of this particular natural disaster. Sure, weather is everywhere, but not like this.

Whenever they broadcast those death statistics for Chicago heatwaves, they always talk about how many elderly 85 year olds died because their air went out for 2 hours. I think July 4th 1995 was the worst one, it may have claimed a total of 20 people, and 18 of them were elderly and trust me, they would've gone anyway soon.

I was biking 20 miles while tripping that day though, so I don't really think it was as bad as the news would have you believe.

New Orleans is seriously a uniquely awesome city. I have a number of good friends from there who live and breathe the culture and history of the city. They are living extensions of the city and everything around it. There's a sense of pride and individuality all over that damn town, and you can feel it. I love it, but I doubt I would really want to live there.

Not every city has that kind of heart. Washington, DC is the perfect example. It has no soul whatsoever. It's like visiting weird amusement park where all the colorful plastic has been replaced with white marble. Nobody is actually from DC, and there's no real emotional attachment to the city and it's background and culture.

Seattle can have your coffee and Chicago can keep your pizza and weird hot dogs.

I'll take a big fucking pot of red beans or a shrimp po'boy any day.

Point well made but you have no idea when a terrorist attack is coming. I mean this is a pretty rare storm here.

I'd rather live on the Gulf Coast than in California---Earthquakes are fucking scary. You know when a hurricane is coming, you board up the windows and move on (my Dad has had to do this twice in the past year at their condo) but Earthquakes!!!! Crazy.

Also a lot of ignoring the (rather obvious) problems in hopes that they would magically dissapear.

And folks.....isn't it a little late for this question to be asked? I mean NO is pretty much gone

Oh shut your mouth Chris or I'm gonna whack you one when I see you in a couple weeks.

SIGH I forgot. I'm female. I can't possibly have an opinion or thought on this.

But it's ok for most of you to be dicks non-stop and say and ask stupid things.

I'll go tie my apron back on and get back in the kitchen. Any of you need anything while I'm in there? :D

Actually the numbers vary a bit, but they usually say 800 and it was in 1995, but you get what I mean.. I thought this was common chicago knowledge. Type in chicago heat wave 1995 into google.

Quote:
In Homewood Cemetery, some of the 739 heat wave victims who died alone were buried together in the Cook County pauper's grave.

OK. So with that.. is it worth it? Is it worth it to put up with dangerous conditions every season?

If I recall, the last time a hurricane hit these two spots head on would be Camille in 1969 or Betsy in 1965.

Compare that with September 2001 or the WTC bombing in 1993.
