New Orleans is seriously a uniquely awesome city. I have a number of good friends from there who live and breathe the culture and history of the city. They are living extensions of the city and everything around it. There's a sense of pride and individuality all over that damn town, and you can feel it. I love it, but I doubt I would really want to live there.

Not every city has that kind of heart. Washington, DC is the perfect example. It has no soul whatsoever. It's like visiting weird amusement park where all the colorful plastic has been replaced with white marble. Nobody is actually from DC, and there's no real emotional attachment to the city and it's background and culture.

Seattle can have your coffee and Chicago can keep your pizza and weird hot dogs.

I'll take a big fucking pot of red beans or a shrimp po'boy any day.

This is what I'm looking for. Not 'it happens everywhere!'

OK. So with that.. is it worth it? Is it worth it to put up with dangerous conditions every season?

You just re-asked what you said you're not looking for.

Huh. I didn't remember that it was so many. Still, I have a very hard time believing that the weather was the sole reason that they died and not just a contributing factor...I do believe that the media loves to sensationalize these things to a great extent.

It's certainly different than when, say 1000 perfectly 25-30 year olds get drowned by DIS wave.

but it does happen almost everywhere. example San Francisco is a gorgeous fucking city, but the ground can open it's mouth and swallow your ass w/o warning. but people still live out there and people still visit.

It's your home. Most people I figure would say, "yes."

I'm going to call one of them tonight.

Well, they died because they didn't have air conditioning or any means to get help, but it's still a disaster, no matter the means or age.

It CAN happen, but doesn't come with frightening regularity. There is no 'Earthquake Season.'

No matter how safe your home is you'll still die eventually. It's silly to decide where to live based on the weather. A couple thousand dead out of the 10-20 million people affected by Katrina is still pretty good odds, if you think about it. Sure, you can lose everything you own - but at least with a hurricane you have advanced warning, and have the oppourtunity to flee. Not so with an earthquake or tornado.

Yeah I was really just poking fun at myself because it really does look like I'm making that distinction. What I'm saying is that many of those 739 people would've died that summer or that fall anyway, heat wave or no heat wave. There's a lot of lives that would've never been lost this year in NO and the surrounding areas were it not for this disaster.

the worst thing that happens here is you get a lot of moss on your roof from the 6 months of drizzle

oh yeah and the possibility of massive earthquakes every several hundred years. however earthquakes will really only kill you if you are in an old building or bridge or something...oh shit, portland has a lot of old buildings and about 15 bridges... that clinches it, I am moving.

Can I just say that while we're arguing about this shit, I've got this stupid fuckign hoity toity bitch from fucking hell giving me shit because I couldn't get her fucking standings set for her manicure and pedicures and underarm waxings????

I mean I'm fucking busy at work today, my husband has been super ill for a week and a half and not getting better so he's at the dr again-I'm stressing about this shit and I'm pissed about NO and the rest of those hurt.

And this dumb bitch is getting all "ummmmm hmmm uhhhh well I need these done and set" I SERIOUSLY almost told her to fuck off on the phone so I told her I'd call back I had a customer standing in front of me. My one boss had to calm me down. I'm just so angry.

I'm soo sooo sooo going to burst a blood vessel right now. grrrrr

EDIT: THE WHOLE POINT of this rant was that there are more fucking things to worry about right now then if your fucking manicure isn't set in an appt book.

As far as natural disasters go, though, volcano has to be one of the worst. You don't get much if any warning. And if it's a bad enough explosion it pushes out thus cloud of noxious gas that kills everything instantly. See Pompeii.

No shit. I know for a fact that around Feb or May for that matter when I'm STILL wearing a jacket that I'll look at myself in the mirror and go "Why the fuck did you move up here?".

Then I'll look at my girlfriend and think "Well, I don't know, but I know why I stayed."

Then I'll fart right in her face.

luckily they say that for Portland at least we would be outside any Mt Hood or St. Helens blast zone - the problem would be for people living along the sandy/clackamas/hood rivers if it blew and melted all the snow - especially in the winter...that would be a lot of people. tacoma is in the real danger zone - ranier has more ice on it than all the other cascade volcanoes combined and if that shit blew and flowed down towards tacoma - bye bye.

This may be the worst or may be the perfect time to ask this, but.....

Why in the world do people live in that section of the country? Seriously. Isn't it a given that three months of the year you're going to be besieged by crazy storms and such? I just can't understand why someone would choose to live in Tornado Alley or the Gulf region.

Someone please explain.

Jesus lives down south. Duh.

what about this guy?

"Although the loss of lives is deeply saddening, this act of God destroyed a wicked city. From 'Girls Gone Wild' to 'Southern Decadence', New Orleans was a city that had its doors wide open to the public celebration of sin. May it never be the same. Let us pray for those ravaged by this disaster. However, we must not forget that the citizens of New Orleans tolerated and welcomed the wickedness in their city for so long,"
- Michael Marcavage, in a statement from the evangelical Christian group, "Repent America," issued today.

Aww, come on, they named their football The Saints--how bad can they be? I guess there'll be an earthquake in Las Vegas next?

People lived in New Orleans because of its sense of history, its musical culture, the friendly people, the beautiful oak trees, the River, the architecture, its european flavor, its delish food, its people's love of good times, and sense of community.

This is a unprecedented disaster this is for the country and for the millions of people with connections to that city.

Obviously DC doesn't have the history and culture that many cities have.

But to say no one is from here and it is like an amusment park ride shows your ignorance. It's one of the fastest growing places right now and it's got tons of things to do. I certaintly don't have much to complain about.

I've grown up outside DC, have been coming here for years and years, and it has some of the most diverse and forward-thinking people anywhere.

Not to mention a lot less superficiality and egos you find in many other cities, including NY, Miami, and LA.

I've lived in NY, spent time in almost every other major city in the US, and I don't think many cities compare to DC, especially now that its one of the only cities not hit by the job loss other cities have been hit with. People are very happy here and love to live here,

So stop by sometime, you'll definitely see how wrong you really are.
