According to a friend of mine in Orlando, gas went up 30 cents a gallon in a 2 hour period yesterday afternoon, and there was a buying panic. Also, the county board of education announced that they cannot get diesel for the school buses, and are discontinuing bus service until further notice. Not school, mind you, just transportation for the kids to get there and back.

I still remember when Orlando had Shaq Diesel power.

It was only ten years ago.

I'm sorry, but 30 cents in a two hour period really seems like inordinate price-gouging. You paid X for the product, you sell it for Y. If you have to pay 3X for the next batch of product, then sell it for 3Y!

I found it for $2.85 yesterday but a lot of the places I drove by had it listed as $2.99. The place I bought it at put the price up on a piece of paper.

edit: anyone know what the highest gas went up to during the crisis in the 70's?

I'm guessing here but I think probably $1.50 at the most when it previously had been like 30 cents.

But I was young so its a TV memory not a real one.

I'm wondering if it's worse now when you factor in inflation and such?

I mean, I think I remember gas being at about $1.30 or something before 2001.

It actually got down to like .89 cents (in GA, which used to have REALLY cheap gas) at one point in either '99 or 2000 and has been creeping up steadily ever since.

Edit: not sure about inflation. I just know that anything before about 1972 is completely different.

Edit 2: I blame Jimmy Carter, Bill Cinton and the Liberal Media....FOR EVERYTHING!!!!

Fuck, I remember a place in Reeferdale where I got gas for $.65/gallon in 95..I could get 11 gallons of gas and two blunts for like 7 bucks...

Oh, and its funny you bring up Carter, since its 1979 style gas lines around this bitch.

Oh, and I know we lost some refineries/capacity for refinement, but shouldn't it take atleast a minute for this type of thing to take serious effect. Are we running on DAY TO DAY oil refinement capacity? Surely not?

Interviewed Gov. Baldacci for a local story yesterday afternoon. He says the AG in Maine will prosecute gougers. I asked him if that's really true and he said the time has passed for political hyperbole and yes he does mean it.

There are a few gas stations in Charlotte that have gas for $2.49, so I'm going to hit one of those up on my way out of town today. I hope there isn't a riot.

Edit: Shit, that was from Tuesday on Charlottegasprices.com and I didn't realize it. There is a place that I saw last night with gas for $2.85 though, so hopefully its the same price and there isnt a riot there.

My understanding is 20.5 days of reserve. And even that was a bit if a shock.

I figured you'd be smart enough to know the difference between real estate and retail products/supply lines, but I guess that was a poor assumption to make. I'll be more explicit next time.

The guy running the corner shop would probably face a pretty severe liquidity crunch if he conducted business this way. It's not like he got the first tankful for free, he's had working capital tied up since day one. A shock like this would tie up more WC that he might not be able to finance.

If you honestly believe this load of crap, then you are advocated quite the short sighted view of doing business. Why don't you explain why this is gouging and not a reasonable market price after Katrina? I'd love for you to regale me with your knowledge of something other than meaningless baseball statistics like team attendance and Star Wars minutiae.

Actually, considering the fact there is a 21 day supply of useable, refined gasoline---it WAS/IS gouging.

And, Dat Panic created by the media.

But I fault not the gougers nor the lemmings who felt the need to fill up every vessel at hand----they are equally garbage
