8:50 A.M. - (AP): -- The world is reacting to America's disaster. Saudi Arabia says it's ready to increase crude oil production to replace market shortages. Venezuela is offering humanitarian aid and fuel. Canada's Red Cross is assembling volunteers. French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder sent messages of sympathy to President Bush.

Pope Benedict says he's praying for victims of the "tragic" hurricane while China's President Hu Jintao expressed his belief that the American people would "rebuild their beautiful homeland."

But not all responses were positive. Islamic extremists are rejoicing. Internet chatter referred to the storm as "Private" Katrina, and said it had joined the global holy war against the U.S.

I was listening to talk radio yesterday and they had a funny news segment, that went something like this:

"Ok, now we sre going to read off all the countries that have offered monetary aid to help the hurricane victims.

Dramatic pause
Ok John, let's read that list again.
Dramatic pause
Ok, and now on to other news..."

I'm so glad France and Germany gave us "messages of sympathy." We'll be sure to pass those along to the victims.

the offering would at the least be a nice sentiment, but even with the massive debt, we are the richest country in the world.

Let's not bother to rebuild our beautiful homeland. Let's just show up in Beijing smelling of 40's and start yelling for the commies to bring out they wimmins.

Maybe they are too busy clearing up after the massive flooding that hit Central and Eastern Europe less than 10 days ago. I don't remember Germany complaining about the lack of American assistance then, never mind poorer nations like Bulgaria, Romania or Croatia.

Foreign aid won't even be necessary, what with all the contracts our federal government is going to give Haliburton to help rebuild the area.

why would i donate my money to a country that just last year voted in an ignorant xenophobic government (and im not just talking about bush) who screws canada with softwood lumber tariffs and the stupidity of the whole bse debacle. the answer is, i wont.america made its statement in november, and now the rest of the world is making theirs. also, the facts are that ive been hearing about the possibility of a catastrophic storm hitting new orleans, and the fact that there would a lot of distruction for a couple years now. why would i give my money to people who couldnt organize themselves worth a damn before the storm hit? i wont.

I don't believe we should send money to disaster victims in other nations so that they give it to us when we need it. We should do it because it's the right thing to do.

Plus, the name that keeps popping up as one of the first to donate some sort of aid is Venezuela, despite the efforts of Pat Robertson.

I've only read alot of demands on Saudi Arabia and Israel to kick back some money from all the aid we have given them over the years. I'm guessing that Israel won't see as much aid as they wanted for leaving Gaza.
I think it is fine if Canada doesn't want to send money, but you come off pretty ignorant and insensitive, especially when a vast majority of New Orleans did evacuate the area. Those left there are mostly poor black people who would be stuck in any city if there was a disaster.
I'm pretty sure that the United States helped Canada out when they had SARS in Toronto. I'm not sure what the impact of the CDC was on the situation, but at least we didn't thumb our noses at our neighbors to the North for Political reasons.

Isn't this a chance for Canada to redeem herself for kicking the Acadians (Cajuns) out of Nova Scotia?

Even though the US has acted (and continues to act) unfairly in the softwood lumber dispute, I think it's safe to assume that Canada won't be thumbing its frostbitten nose at the Gulf Coast situation. The two issues aren't related at all - and both nations have strong enough humanitarian philosophies to put aside political arguments when it comes to delivering aid.

I think I read earlier that Canada has already sent aid of some kind.

This is like getting pissed at my family for not sending money to Bill Gates if his house burns. It's dumb. We send aid to Indonesia because they are IN NEED. We are not IN NEED.

No, this is like sending money to Bill Gates' neighbor if Bill Gates' neighbor's house burns. Just because we, as a country, are rich, does not mean every individual is not hurting. Those people who lost everything are hurting, they are not Bill Gates.

I don't think a city with a poverty rate of 30% can be compared to one of the richest men in the world, I could be wrong, but that pretty much seems like comparing apples to oranges.
Canadians, I'm sorry I was a little harsh in my earlier posts. Most of you are good people and both of my great grand parents were French Canadian. I just don't think you should punish another country during a natural disaster for its Political beliefs. I definitely am not a fan of the authoritarian leadership in Indonesia, but I never opposed assisting their massive population after the Tsunami.

The analogy he made was that the US as a country was Bill Gates, not New Orleans. I.e the US is the richest country around and shouldn't need aid.
