Big ups, J. Rice! You literally owned the Falcons, but you are still the best ever to lace up cleats on a football field.

yeah, i'm sure all those hours you spent watching Jim's career educate your descision.

I'll throw out that JB may be one of the most OVERRATED players ever. And that's not to take anything away from what he was......

are you trying to out-logic me, Crack?

My argument is actually the freak vs. technology/evolution.

Jim Brown is mos def the best player of his era; but you gotta totally be objective concerning anything that happened in sports before about 1980 b/c of the evolution and conditioning of athletes.

Homer!!!!

I do consider (along with Scotty D) LT to be the best defensive player ever....But Rice is a better football player. The fucking frustrating thing about LT (along with two of your other heros Steve, D. Straw and Doc Gooden) is that they COULD have been so much better had they not wasted themselves.

I know it seems that way, but I really believe I'd have mentioned LT no matter where I was from. Unbelievable combo of strength and speed.

Straw and Doc are 2 of the biggest disappointments for Mets fans. Gooden particularly hurts. Wha' happened? Was it just the drugs or did they pile too many innings on that 19 year old arm? The change in Gooden from '85 to '86 was startling. Fastball lost velocity, curve lost it's bite and it just got worse and worse.

Steve

Rice is certainly one of the all-time greats, but THE greatest is the guy who threw him the ball...

JOE FUCKING MONTANA!!!

Rice was not the best ever at any position. That title belongs to Jim Brown. Here are a few of his accomplishments:

4 MVPs
Rookie of the Year
All-American in 2 sports
Only RB to average 100 yds a game for his career
Only RB in the top 20 in history to average 5+ yds per carry
Won the rushing title 8 of his first 9 seasons

He completely dominated the sport, without even a close rival. You can't say that about Rice. Obviously Rice is a great a player, and the best in history at his position. He did have two HOF QBs throwing to him and he was in a revolutionary offensive system that now more than half the league tries to emulate.

If we're drafting the best players "at their prime", I'd take Jim Brown #1.

A lot of that is Walsh's system... and Rice. Switch Elway and Montana that the starting point in their careers. Elway becomes the undisputable best QB ever, and Montana is pumping gas after two or three seasons.

By objective, you mean giving modern players an arguably unfair advantage. A better question might be 'Was Rice a better player than Brown in relation to their peer group?' Brown wins that one in my book.

Rice: Best WR Ever. Best player of his generation. Will be missed.

another thing that is mind-fucking-numbing about brown is that he didn't miss a game in the 9 years that he played as a pounding, physical back. dude personifies everything that is good about football.

As a diehard 49er fan I'm not even sure he's the greatest QB ever. I think he had a huge advantage of introducing the West Coast Offence to the masses. Teams had no clue how to shut down an offence that throws on 1st down & to anyone who's eligible. Teams had to completely rethink everything. They had to get rid of run stopping linebackers & get ones that could cover RB's & TE's. Think of reversing the roles & Young introduces it & Montana inherits a system teams have figured out to defend or imagine Elway or Marino in his prime in that O with Walsh at the helm.

Jay Mariotti had an interesting take a few months back about how maybe if Marino was on the 49ers he still might not have won Super Bowls because he was so thickheaded he had to control the offence & he might not have let Walsh do his thing. Not sure how much validity that has. Jay also said around the same time the Angels are the AL West version of Baltimore & were gonna completly fall apart & let Oakland win the division.

My take on the greatest? Ronnie Lott. No DB that had an effect on the other teams running game & passing game at the same time. He could cover like a corner & hit like a linebacker. And an emotional leader on some of the NFL's best teams. The hit on Icky Woods, the tipped pass vs the Rams, all the key hits, tackles & interceptions, 9 & a half fingers. The guy came up big in the biggest situations time & time again.

Back to Rice though. Insane. Insanely huge impact & maybe the greatest offensive weapon ever.

I'll just point you guys here and let the numbers do the talking: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/RiceJe00.htm

As usual in these arguments, I'm not taking anything away from Jim Brown---dude was a GREAT Lacrosse player.

It's Jim Brown. And I think you know who I root for.

YPC is just sick. Sick.
