Someone (maybe Smafty but I'm not sure) recently mentioned that they clean out/reformat their Ipod every couple months.

How does one easily do this?

Seems like a good idea.

you just use the "restore" option instead of update in your ipod updater thing.

i mean, that erases everything and updates the software, if applicable, but i don't think that it performs a "reformat" or anything, technically, just gives you the chance to start over. there may be a way to explicitly reformat it but i've never done so.

yeah, i've also never had any noticable results from doing this, either.

i think I need to update my Pod b/c the new version of ITunes has some new shit on it (PodCasts etc) that doesnt seem to wanna talk to my Pod about.

Plus, it seems like its time to start over. Too many fucking horror stories.

Yeah, for every new iTunes release there's normally an iPod firmware update.

There normally isn't a noticeable difference unless you delete and re-add files quite often. Adding tunes and leaving them there tend to work pretty well.

Most of the time I've had to restore because the database gets corrupt when transferring files using Anapod or foo_pod. I don't think it's a proper reformat either (maybe a quick format?), but I'm not sure how significant that is.

"Restore" is the equivalent of putting the Windows disc in your computer and reloading the entire OS - the drive is wiped clean, therefore it's a reformat.

that's not what reformat means though. you're not rewriting anything regarding the file system or sectors on the disk, you're just flipping all the siginificant bits that make it writable space. maybe i'm wrong though, it just seems like it happens really fast for a true "reformat".
