but tell me about The Band.

One of those groups that I've always heard of, but never really heard. Where do I start? I've heard that "Songs From the Big Pink" and the Brown album are some of their best efforts...is this accurate?

Go rent "The Last Waltz"

Its one of the dirtiest coaine pictures ever.....

Musically, I would go ahead and drop the cash on the double disc "soundtrack" to that movie. I consider it to be to be among the best shit ever put out.....

As for normal output, Big Pink and the s/t second album are damn fine.

The Band should have named themselves Jail, Prison or Rape. Those dudes are Di-sgusting.

An earlier live album that I don't ever see much love for is Rock Of Ages. Amazing performance from somewhere (don't remember) on New Year's Eve 1971. Blistering horn arrangements written Allen Toussaint. Wish I had my vinyl copy with me.

Did Toussaint ever get located in New Orleans? Last I heard he was still missing.

I haven't heard any word on him.

Just did a news search. From KBTV website:

More From New Orleans Music Community Found, But Some Still Missing

More members of New Orleans` famed music community are turning up as Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts enter a second week.
The manager of singer Alex Chilton tells Billboard.com he`s learned the Big Star frontman was rescued from his home a few days after the storm hit.
While he admits he`s not sure where Chilton is now, he says he`s heard from mutual friends that the performer is safe.
Soul great Irma Thomas, who originally recorded the Rolling Stones` hit "Time is On My Side," is included on a Katrina-related Craigslist of musicians known to be safe following the storm.
Singer Clarence "Frogman" Henry -- best known for the 1956 hit "Ain`t Got No Home" -- and blues great Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown are also on the list.
Susan Cowsill -- from the `60s family group The Cowsills -- left her home of 13 years in advance of the storm, and is currently staying with friends in the Nashville area.
But information on her brother Barry is vague.
According to a message on the Cowsills` website, he`s believed to have taken shelter at New Orleans Convention Center, but no one has heard from him in several days.
The legendary Fats Domino and members of his family were rescued shortly after the storm, and they took refuge at the home of a Louisiana State University football player.
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Allen Toussaint also survived the hurricane and was among the thousands who fled to the New Orleans Superdome.

Just picked this up on disc a little while ago. I remember listening to it on my brother's vinyl when I was a wee tot. Its great. Disc 2 has got 10 prev unreleased boners.

No offense because I love The Last Waltz, and the movie, but I have read it's considered as a lesser effort by The Band live standards. But, the line up is surely smokin'. And, I never saw them live so who the hell am I to know the difference.

Clarence "The Frogman" Henry is badass.

And relevant, since The Band covered "Ain't Got No Home".

You can't go wrong with Big Pink or The Band. IMO, their quality dropped off big time after those two, although I'm also a big fan of Moondog Matinee, which is their covers album (and the reissue adds a bunch of great bonus tracks).

For a starting point, what about Dylan and the Band's Basement Tapes? I consider it one of the greatest collections ever (I think I had it as #1 on my Listmania) and it shows the Band in a good light - rockin', partying, and weeping in their beer... plus it's got some of Dylan's greatest tunes.

The Brown Album? Isn't that Primus? :?

Anyhoo, I've just started to get into these guys (again, after hearing Moondog Matinee many years ago). They have a Greatest Hits disc out w/ 18 songs on it that's pretty damn good. What surprises me is how good the sound quality is.

If you'd like to hear some of their stuff, PM me.

She still gets the "from the 60's family group" tag even after everything else she's done in recent years.
