All I have is Laid, but it is a goddamn quality album!
-Sometimes
-Say Something
-Laid
-One of the Three

Some amazing songs on there, and excellent Eno production.
Is their other stuff worth picking up?

Yes but it gets increasingly less stunning further into the career.

No absolute clunkers, though.

thanks. oh... the band.

laid is the best thing they've ever put out. pleased to meet you probably comes in second (also eno-produced) with maybe gold mother next. that one has two pretty good singles in "come home" and "sit down." i have strip-mine too, but rarely listen to it.

i saw tim booth in february. he was on a promo tour for his solo album, doing radio gigs, but he played a real show for a local station's live series. i had nothing else to do that night and it was free and nearby, so i went. he was accompanied by a girl playing keyboards and a guy on guitar. the first song was "laid", but slowed down over about five minutes. it was tremendous. the way he sang it put the song in a totally different perspective for me. instead of thinking of it as a humorous approach on a relationship gone awry, it seemed more about desperation for closure. the next few songs were from his solo album and they were pretty great as well. he sang "sometimes" and brought the house down before ending on another song from bone.

i walked out of there very impressed. he has a great, distinctive voice and good stage presence. the band looked like they were really enjoying themselves and the crowd was pretty good. i'd say it's one of my favorite shows of the year so far.

Listening to the best of right now. Good bad. Laid brings the house down EVERYTIME we play it. No exceptions.

Great band that really hit their stride after 1989. Only just got my hands on Pleased To Meet You a few months ago and it was a great way to end things.

Don't just settle with Laid!

Millionaires and Pleased To Meet You are fantastic. They were also produced by Lord Eno.

James were probably one of the most underrated and overlooked bands over the 90s along with Mansun.

Easy...by "bring the house down", I mean people actually respond to the song after we do it by *GASP*, clapping.

Plus we usually play it last or next to last so people are of course WASTED. Myself included.

Isn't this part of the reason they broke up? - Just tired of not getting their just due. I know Tim Booth was always complaining that he didn't feel they got the support they deserved.

I have come to the conclusion that one of my bands MUST cover "Sometimes".

It would be a challenge, but it is such a beautiful song, that I think it could be magical to play.

(thread aside: "Nonchalanting" is a Jerry Remy-coined word for what Manny Ramirez shouldn't do when going to first base. "He really nonchalanted that one, Don. No excuse for that.")

I think that's the song that inspired Eno to produce the album Laid. :)

"Laid" (more so than anyother song in history!) drives young white women into a frenzy. It's like they are programed. Whenever this song starts.

1st. The females eyes bulge at the second of recognition.

2nd. Eyes still bulging giant gummy smiles spread across their faces

3rd they enter a zombie like trance searching eachother out collecting in groups (the larger the group the more dangerous BEWARE!).

4th Cavort and spasm while singing at the top of their lungs "SHE ONLY CUOMES WHEN SHES ON TOOOOOOOOOP!!!!!!!!

Busty can attest to this I'm sure, in fact if you get him drunk he might open up and tell you of all the times he has been scared for his life. "In the shit" as he puts it.

You've been warned

D00dz!!!! Busty really does do a kick-ass version of "Laid"

My pleasure to have played bass behind him on this one at least 418 times. It is a certifiable panty-moistener.

The panties Tim Booth wanted to moisten were probably on men.

I haven't even gotten Laid yet.

I can't believe I just said that.

I heard Gold Mother when it came out. I found it bland and not easily distinguished from the Slop Dragons, Inisipid Carpets, and all the other brit-crap that was out at the time. Never felt the compulsion to follow up on their later releases.

You weren't far off, but they definitely came into their own in subsequent albums. They're one of my favourite bands from the 90's and "Sometimes" gives me chills every time I hear it.

Whiplash is also wonderful. Pretty much everything from Seven on is great, aside from that live album they put out when Tim left - I thought that was a sloppy piece of crap from a band I KNOW puts on a great show from a few bootlegs I have (the Woodstock 94 one in particular.)

I had a girlfriend once who was really into this group. Taking some of her James cds was the best thing to come out of the relationship. Every time I hear "Out To Get You" I feel like crashing my car into her house. Anyway... the bonus live acoustic disc that comes with the import of their 'Best Of' cd showcases how fucking amazing this band was. I HIGHLY recommend listening to it.
