on some abc news show, about the lack of evac planning following katrina:

"Whoever was in charge of planning was so detached from the realities of inner city life in New Orleans ... that they couldn't conceive of the notion that they couldn't load up their SUV's, put $100 worth of gas in there, put [in] some sparkling water and drive off to a hotel and check in with a credit card," Obama said.

That quote doesn't seem very extraordinary. Haven't enough people already made that point?

Yes, but none of them were politicians.

I wasn't planning the evacuation or anything, but i understood the situation at least 2 years ago. So I would think the person did understand the issues since this potential situation has been discussed in the media every year when hurricane season starts for a while now.

I thought I saw Hilary Clinton say basically the same thing yesterday (though I don't know when she said it).

I'm sure they aren't the only two high profile politicians to say it, but I could be wrong. I don't follow this sort of thing that much, so I probably am.

Weird, a potential opponent for the Democratic presidential nomation in XX number of years echoing the message of the better candidate.

It was always apparent that he was smart, but I still can't get used to the mature Mark Clark.

Thirteen years of Catholic school, and now Catholic university, will make a person able to intuit some fairly deep concepts.

Plus, the man-boy love is tight.

The comeback is surprisingly tame.

I was expecting worse, much worse. Just absolutely filthy.

I'm all for obama, but if anyone understands the situation the NO poor were in its the Mayor

There's an interview creeping around with the mayor on how the governor and government would give him no power at all to do anything. He's pretty heated and pissed off in it.

I provided more detail in a previous Katrina thread, but here's a brief:
Mayor Nagin actually spent a lot of money to improve evacuation plans after Hurricane Ivan last year. People where pretty pissed when the evacuations turned into a giant clusterfuck and hurricane didn't even hit, but I have read accounts that the new Contraflow plan worked much better this year.

Secondly C. Ray Nagin is a former VP for Cox Communications, with an accounting degree from Tuskegee University and an MBA from Tulane University. He switched to the Democratic Party from the GOP only days before filing for the mayoral election in 2002. Perhaps he did grow up in poverty, but I haven't found anything yet that really plays that up.

That's not the point.

The point is that the government (you know, the one of the people, by the people and FOR THE PEOPLE) didn't consider the large segment of the population that could not afford to evacuate themselves. And once disaster struck, that same government somehow couldn't get to the same people that the cursed Liberal Media could get to.

Oh yeah, I forgot. The Liberal Media were in charge of bringing in food, supplies, medicine, and protection from criminals for thousands of people. That's why they got in there so fast.

Right.

You see, there's supposed to be a plan.
There's supposed to be accountability from FEMA and The Department Of Homeland Security.
There was supposed to be lots of stuff that there was not.

Politics aside, you agree that the government... including the White House... dropped the ball. The difference is that the White House is coming off as flip and uncaring. Completely blind (or uncaring) to the fact that there are not people who can afford - like they can - to fend for themselves at certain times.

As the most outspoken Republican on the board you take a lot of crap. But I do not see how you can keep defending what is obviously and incompetent presidency. Partisanship aside.
