Interesting read: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05254/568876.stm

Here's a few lines...

Journalists complain that it took a whole week to do this [regarding the rescue]. A former Air Force logistics officer had some words of advice for us in the Fourth Estate on his blog, Moltenthought:

"We do not yet have teleporter or replicator technology like you saw on 'Star Trek' in college between hookah hits and waiting to pick up your worthless communications degree while the grown-ups actually engaged in the recovery effort were studying engineering.

the facts are that all levels of government should have been more prepared for a scenario they knew was coming.

I love facts, but when Chertoff and Brown both claimed (a)no one knew the levees might not hold and (b)they didn't know anyone was in the Convention Center before the end of the week, then each of them is either vastly incompetent or a pitiful liar.

I'm not blaming any level of government absolutely, and each is responsible and should be held accountable for some of the missteps taken in preparation before and reaction after the storm.

Plus, the federal government released a State of Emergency Declaration before landfall in Louisiana and Mississippi. Given the actions of the federal government after the storm and later levee breaches, what is really the point of making this declaration prior to the storm?

Also, if this were three terrorist bombs planted and detonated on the levees without the advance warning, is there any reasonable expectation that Homeland Security would have reacted to the catastrophe and been able to minimize the devastation?

This is what bothers me about Brown. He was interviewed on Sunday before the storm hit, and he made the following point(s):

"When I took over in '03, we knew we needed to revamp our disaster protocol, so we looked at the most potentially cataclysmic disasters that could happen to the US, and we picked a category 5 hurricane hitting New Orleans and so we planned for that. A year later we drilled that scenario and so we are completely ready for this." (paraphrased)

Clearly that was not the case. The scientific, weather, and many locals new this was more of a legitimate possibility than the man in charge of enacting the national disaster response protocol in the face of the worst natural disaster in the U.S. This guy dropped the ball. Of course, the hurricane couldnt have been prevented, but while everybody is going to start slagging the local leaders (mayor, governor) and the president, lets not forget the guy who claimed to be totally in control of the situation.

Ultimately, the problem was very simple.

You can show with all kinds of charts, graphs and computer simulations what could happen should a major storm hit an area. But, it's like the boy who cried wolf. When over and over again it doesn't happen, people get lazy.

Of course, we've had major storms do damage here in the US and we've seen the affects elsewhere, but unfortunately, it seems to be human nature to need to experience horrid shit like this firsthand before you take it really seriously.

C'mon Dalen----at some point you gotta stop being such a fucking Bush apologist and actually realize that critiscizing the government is ok---no matter who is President(I would guess that if Clinton/Gore/Kerry was pres you would be HOWLING)

See, I dont think Bush is personally responsible. The president is only as good as his people at every level. And sometimes history and the size of this govt. is a pesidents worst enemy. But the failures of FEMA and even the open mismanagement of the infrastructure in NO by the state and Fed are his fault b/c he is the CEO of this country.

Also, I realize that Bill Clinton is responsible for Katrina (and 911, The Holacaust, The Rape of Nanking and the Crucifiction of Y'alls Lord and Slayer, Jesus Christ) but you lemmings on the street are gonna have to learn to stop being completely in the bag for your boy, GWB, like Sean Hannity and learn to actually level some real criticism. Call a spade a spade. If the Fed looks bad, GWB takes a hit. Sorry. Shit, I think that Gov. of Louisianna should resign. Blech.

I'm not a Bush apologist dude, but I will post stories that I find have interesting points, such as this.

Thing is, because I do stick up for Bush sometimes on here [and I'm in the minority], I'm labeled an apologist or Right Winger, when that's far from the truth.

Especially when we're presented with such wonderful facts as

And while I disagree on this particular issue, I'm glad to have that minority viewpoint up in this bitch.

Dalen and TwilightKid usually have the most intricate, and probably most all-internet popular/accessed, avatars, so I'd look to them. And TK isn't in this thread... So....
