Echo & the Bunnymen emerge from 'Siberia'

LONDON (Billboard) - U.K. rock act Echo & the Bunnymen will release their new album, "Siberia," in the United States on September 20, and will begin a North American tour in Washington D.C. on November 18.

Lead singer Ian McCulloch believes longtime fans are likely to be especially pleased with the 11-track Cooking Vinyl USA release, which is highlighted by the jangling, nostalgic opener "Stormy Weather," the self-searching, strident "Parthenon Drive" and the classic Bunnymen rocker "Sideways Eight."

The video for "Stormy Weather" can be viewed at http://www.bunnymen.com.

"The band we've got around us now are the closest to the old Bunnymen we've ever had," he tells Billboard. "Not that we've intentionally set out to capture the past in any way. We've tried to be a little less structured in the songwriting, but not forgetting the importance of a good song. We've got the balance here, I think."

The recruitment of producer Hugh Jones is also a nod to the band's past -- he last worked with the act on 1981's sophomore set, "Heaven Up Here." "Having Hugh on board has been great -- it's as if he's a sort of glue fitting everything together," says guitarist Will Sergeant. "We haven't had that luxury for a while, because we've produced ourselves the last few times."

McCulloch and company kick off a 15-date U.K. and European tour October 22 in Nottingham, England, followed by 16 North American dates. Cooking Vinyl says live work will continue through summer 2006.

I've heard very good things, and the first single is better than most of their other post-reunion material. I'll be buying it.

The single (Stormy Weather) and the song "Of A Life" are the best from the album in my opinion. A majority of the tracks are 5+ min, but the record doesn't come across as long-winded.

I hope this is good as the House of Love and Weeding Present left a lot to be desired.

I have been off my medicine (slsk) for a while now as I get my new computer up to par. When I left this just leaked and wanted to hear it so badly.

Frosted, did you like the last New Order record?

I like the New Order much more than I think I should, if that makes any sense.

The songs are dorky as hell, but they stick with repeated listening.

It certainly doesn't do for me what something like Low-Life does, but I like it.

Don't think much of the 40-thousand dance remixes out there, though.

I haven’t listened to it but have only heard good things about it. The reason I brought it up, besides liking your taste in music, is because I saw those two bands together a long time ago. A great night and I have always liked New Order better between the two. Surprising because I have always been a guitar person but love New Order. Now I have a big desire to listen to Low-Life but only have it on vinyl and wonder if I will actually look though all of it just to hear it.

Never got around to hearing the latest one but I will.

The new Echo is, indeed, excellent. Despite my skepticism when I read Ian's referring to it as a "masterpiece", I have to agree that it's their best release since Ocean Rain.
errm, IMO.

Ocean Rain isn't that great apart from 'Killing Moon' and 'Thorn of Crowns'. Actually the Bunnymen are pretty overated all in all. I love most of their contemporaries though.

I kind of agree with you in that they are kind of overrated and I seem to like the bands they have influenced more.

That being said Songs To Learn and Sing is a perfect album. I haven’t even looked it up but I bet that AMG has given this a five star rating. Seek this out and give it a test drive because it should blow you away. I never recommend greatest hits packages but like Singles Going Steady it’s a must own.

I'm excited to check this out. Ian McCulloch was entertaining the last few times I saw them perform live. I've never seen anyone smoke as much as he does while singing, not to mention the drunkenness.

I love Echo & The Bunneymen and the new song sounds solid, but what the hell is up with that video. That's one of the biggest amateur jobs I've ever watched. Ian swaying back and forth on a swing? Kicking a soccer ball around? WTF?

Check out the Portishead live video, PNYC. I almost got cancer just watching it.
