I've come to the conclusion that 'Lullaby' is the best Cure song

If you're into the more fucked up, ambient parts of Boards of Canada, you'll probabaly LOVE Porn Sword Tobacco. Their new album is excellent, and their debut was one of my favorite ambient releases last year.

Here's a proper review of the new album...

Let's not beat around the bush here; 'Explains Freedom' is jaw-droppingly beautiful. Whilst it's cripplingly easy to become hyperbolic about such things, I don't think it would be overly stretching credibility to suggest that Porn Sword Tobacco's debut full-length proper may just invoke a similar rush of profound acceptance as watching a crimson sun-rise or glimpsing a shooting star. Alright; that is hyperbolic bollocks, but 'Explains Freedom' is almost indescribably good. Recorded in the heart of a Swedish forest, it's easy to imagine Henrik Jonsson (aka Porn Sword Tobacco) somehow channelled the dust speckled sunlight into his equipment, with songs such as 'Praying With Benny' and 'Old Booze, New Friends' possessing an emotionally clamorous quality that remains teasingly out of sight. Broadly comparable to artists such as Marsen Jules and The Boats, Jonsson nonetheless sounds absolutely nothing like either, combining warm analogue melodies and rain-fall one moment ('Naturens Kraft Och Klang') before coaxing you in on bleached piano and Badalamenti synths the next ('Soft airgun&electric'). So lovely it makes your teeth hurt, 'Explains Freedom' takes on Harold Budd and Eno at their own game... and wins.

I downloaded this album a couple nights ago due to the constant praise I've been reading, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. I should be able to tonight.

We'll see. I haven't been listening to hardly anything but ambient-type electronica for the last couple days, especially lots of BoC. It's just what I'm in the mood for.

oh, well then you might.

it's very cinematic. could have been a soundtrack IMO. it progresses nicely, and actually gets more twisted towards the end.

np: that song with the twins from Good Charlotte... Got-damn! Awful! The bridge/chorus that the boys do absolutely ruins an otherwise good song. (I love the drum-part. Has a garage/polka, Nortec feeling.)

Oh. Damn. If those Crab-lander fuckers don't shut the fuck up, I am going to jump out my bedroom room and hope for the worst.

Just listening to Eleventh Dream Day Beet last night from 1989 and these guys were great, and still are. Very nice mix of Neil Young and Television and Lou Reed and maybe a bit of Sonic Youth. Not sure which one I would call their best. Rick Rizzo learned well from the Neil Young songbook, and Doug McCombs on bass (also of Tortoise) and Janet Beveridge Bean on drums (also of Freakwater). Being late to the party in about 1999, the first one I got was Eighth...and I loved it immediately. And then they released a new one in 2000 called Stalled Parade that easily became one of my favorites of the year. Wow, what a great, raw, sloppy, turmoil filled album! Can't think of any other album in recent memory that so well captures that Neil Young/Crazy Horse/Lou Reed/Velvet Underground sound I like so much.

And some of the older ones were a bit harder to find at the time so I kind of forgot to look anymore. But I scored a used copy of Beet not too long ago and have been listening to it a lot, and apparently it was reissued with some of the others in 2001 so I guess is much easier to find now, although mine is the original.

I think i enjoy Sigur Ros a bit more 'colder', but it's still a pretty enjoyable release. It works better as a whole then a bunch of single (downloaded mp3) songs.
