I need input and recommends about this band; I have The Wall, which I enjoy, but have never really loved. I've wanted to hear more but frankly have never really known where to begin, what to avoid etc. And, the reason I ask all of this is that the local music emporium is selling most of their catalogue for $9.99 a piece. After purusing AMG for some back story on the albums, I think I'd like to hear:

Animals
Wish You Were Here
Meddle
Dark Side of the Moon

Let me know what you think....

You have a great list as starters. I'd recommend The Final Cut as well. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a very cool record too, but very different from their later work.

Ummagumma is a nice record, but any from your list or the two mentioned above are quite a bit better. Have fun- great band to explore!

Animals is an underrated album. If you want something less obvious than The Wall, DSOTM or WYWH, go for Animals.

Just run. Run fast and don't look back. It's not too late to save yourself.

Animals, WYWH, DSOTM. Save Meddle for last, as there's a lot of samey sounding stuff between "One of These Days" and "Seamus". Atom Heart Mother, although weird, is an underrated masterpiece. The title track is orchestral psychedelia, then there are three not-samey-sounding more proper "songs", then the completely whacked out "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast".

If you want to check out their early stuff, the best place to start is Relics.

Stick with everything they put out before The Wall. If you dig the Wall, you'll dig Animals. I prefer their pre-DSOTM output. My favorite band from the 60s. I have always prefered them over The Beatles/Rolling Stones battle.

The Final Cut is also vastly underrated. I look at it like a continuation of the wall, or maybe a prequel, whatever. Good Stuff, though.

MY top recommendations would be:
The Final Cut
Meddle
Animals
Wish You Were Here
More

you probably already know every song on Dark Side of the Moon and don't realize it. Good album, but i feel like i was kinda sick of it before i ever bought it.

Unless you're planning an ether binge, stay the fuck away from Ummagumma. Seriously. Nobody in their right head should listen to that album EVER.

I have all of their albums, and the one that I like the most that has yet to be mentioned is Obscured By Clouds.

Ouch. Maybe not DumpJack's bag, but I was going to suggest the experimental Ummagumma. I still find "Several Species Of
Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict" my favorite among the PF catalog. (Then again, I only own The Wall & Animals.) Fantastic spacey psychedelia that Ummagumma.

i started with piper and bought chronologically. it was kind of cool to see their transformation from a psychedelic pop band to a prog rock band. totally unneccessary and a waste of money in retrospect, but cool nonetheless. atom heart mother and/or meddle a worth buying first, though.

Definitely Meddle. Dark Side of the Moon is great, but overplayed.

meddle and/or animals.

i also agree with the more and obscured by clouds mentions, as they contain some of floyd's best tunes ever. but they also include some (IMO) throwaway instrumentals as they are film soundtracks.

As I've said before, "Wot's...Uh The Deal" is one of the bestest tunes ever.

Forgot to mention More. Technically a soundtrack, but it has a few great rockers like "The Nile Song".

Pink Floyd - More

I concur.

Also, David Gilmour's second solo album, About Face, is a definite must-have.

"Murder" is better than anything on a Pink Floyd record after The final Cut. I just wish the ending were better, because it annoys the shit out of me as is.

although the title track from Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking has been in my head for 3 days now.

So I just got back from said emporium and picked up:

Meddle
Dark Side of the Moon
Wish You Were Here
Animals

Figure I'll listen in alphabetical order. I'll let you all know my thoughts after I listen to them all. So far, Meddle doesn't disappoint. I like what I hear.
