Guaranteed you won't like Animals on the first listen-but give it another and probably another chance.

Yeah, you definitely have to be in a patient mood for some of their stuff.

So after having listened to all four albums straight through my intitial gut reaction would be:

Meddle : Really enjoyed it quite a lot, even the 23+ min of Echoes. I like Gilmour on here.

Dark Side of the Moon : Interesting. Never heard any of the songs outside of 'Money' which amazes me actually. I found it a bit hard to get into, but definitely worth a second listen. This, I enjoyed the least.

Wish You Were Here : Excellent stuff on here, can't wait to hear it again.

Animals : Also excellent, I actually find this to be one of the more accessible albums here. I definitely see how it segues into The Wall. This, I can't wait to hear again as well.

Many thanks again for your comments and input, much appreciated.

This shocks me beyond belief.... you'd never heard "Brain Damage" before?? No "Us and Them?" No "Time?" Christ, those were all staples on the radio station in the late 70s/early 80s... y'know, back when some radio stations would play cuts from an entire album.

And some of them are still staples of classic rock radio -- you've never been exposed to classic rock radio?

Grew up in a small town in Northern Ontario where there was no radio except for a single AM channel. So, no exposure to classic rock radio for me as a young 'un... ..no friends listened to it either. As an adult, I stopped listening to the radio years ago.

I know it surprises even me that I never heard Dark Side of the Moon until this afternoon. The only cut I ever heard was Money, that's it. Overall, it was actually really enjoyable listening to those four albums straight through. I was just sitting on the couch writing a paper. It paired well.

Another cool thing is to listen to those albums backwards, I.E.:

The Wall
Animals
Wish You Were Here
Dark Side of the Moon
Meddle

...try it, you'll like it.

Im happy only having Wish you Were Here (mainly for the title track) and Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and I don't even listen to those that much.

I don't, but damn if I'm not curious if it really pairs up. Does it?

Dusty, I think I'll take your advice today and play those 5 albums in reverse order. I was going to take the Wall out for a spin today, so I guess we'll do reverse-chron today.

Yeah, I hate that song too, luckily the rest of the album makes up for it, especialy Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 8,9,10...or whatever parts are on side 2)

A couple of the MANY sites that discuss this and list the many things to pay attention to. At least it's one hell of a way to piss away an evening if you've got nothing better to do. Advice: best done with a group.

As far as the album goes, I'm sorry that thus far the only track you had heard was "Money". That's my least fave.

I just read Nick Mason's book, and he mentioned something I've never known before about "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"--evidently (my copy's in storage so I can't check it out), as the album ends, one of the last things Rick Wright plays is the melody from "See Emily Play," extremely slowed down.

In the same way that any random piece of music paired with any random movie will look like it syncs up provided you already think it's supposed to.

We humans are nothing if not pattern-seeking organisms. Especially when stoned.
