I've really never given Bejar much time, but a good buddy of mine recently recommended particular parts of his catalog to me. I haven't listened to many of the records yet, but so far, I think the Pitchfork lambasting of This Night is way off. And from what I can tell, there isn't really a consensus "best" record from him, which is kinda neat to see these days.

Anyhow, what's your favorite Destroyer record? If anything's clear to me yet, I *really* vastly prefer his solo work to his songs with the NPs.

i think that most people would say Streethawk was his best, but i like Your Blues the most.

See, most people I've talked to seem to swear by City of Daughters.

That's his best out of the ones I've heard, which isn't many. It's been so long since I've heard it that I wouldn't know anymore, though.

Same here, though I don't have City Of Daughters yet.

In case it's not clear, I really have no strong opinion about his Destroyer work. I'm mostly oddly excited that a seemingly solid musician has a variety of reactions from people. So much of an indie rock artist's catalog these days seems dominated by that ONE BIG IMPORTANT STATEMENT RECORD or whatever, which I think ends up missing a lot of the good a band can offer.

OK, so that's kinda obvious.

Goddamn Red Sox. That is one tired ass team.

Yeah, kinda the subtext innit?

I'd be elated to not post again in this thread and instead watch a bunch of people argue over their favorite Destroyer records. Maybe dude just doesn't inspire that kind of adulation/etc.

he doesn't, but it also helps to post controversial threads during working hours if you want responses. it looks like your circle of friends prefers city of daughters to it might be time to pick that one up.

I enjoyed the last two full-lengths quite a bit (both are solid 8's for me), but the most recent EP is not so hot. I'm unfamiliar with the rest.

I've only heard Streethawk and Your Blues, and prefer the latter.

Destroyer is fucking horrid. I don't mind the New Pornographers though.

It's called Notorious Lightning. eMusic? The internet? Your favorite record store? The Merge website? All of the above? It's your call, although it sucks (as stated before).

Neko Case > Destroyer >> AC Newman

Agreed. He's much better on his lonesome, but I'm still a sucker for 'Jackie' on MR and the one where the bells go 'no, no, no, no...' on EV. Overall, I'd say City of Daughters is my fav, followed closely by Streethawk, This Night, and Your Blues.

Destroyer > ac newman > np > neko...

and, the thing is, all Destroyer albums are pretty solid - if you like Bejar, you'll pretty much like all of them. "Your Blues" has a lot more MIDI instrumentation, "This Night" has longer songs, "City" and "Streethawk" are earlier stuff...

I like them all...

streethawk is my favorite with Bad Arts being my favorite song from that album.

Really like This Night and haven't listened to Your Blues or City of Daughters enough to form a solid opinion on those.
