When I found out Tom Waits was performing in NY this Tuesday night, of course I had no hope in going, however I told my mom about it and jokingly asked if we could go. Tonight I was sitting outside with her and she asked me how much tickets were, and she asked if that was the only time he's playing. I said yes and I wasn't sure of how much tickets were, but I kept joking around with her saying it would be a lot of fun to get out of Richmond for a while and go to New York, and she actually began considering it. She told me to go check ticket prices and let her know after I did.

The cost of ONE TICKET: 250.00

Fuck me. If it was just him performing i'd pay it, but to see Dave Matthews and Galactic and John Mayer? Hell fucking no.
WHY couldn't they be like 50 dollars?

i'd pay $250 to not sit through Galactic's 25 minute songs were all 15 member take a solo.

Too bad Tom Waits doesn't tour like a normal artist would.

That just makes it so much more exciting when and if he ever does.

I can't understand how artists expect fans to pay that kind of money.

The Eagles are coming here and charging $65-$250 to see them on their "Farewell Part One" tour. Ridiculous.

Not that I was eager to see them anyways but that's just crazy.

Farewell part one? what the fuck? How many parts will there be and why would you go to the first one when you can go to the last, real, farewell?

Hey, you know, I really care about you.. but if you ever did anything to harm Tom (we're on a first name basis, you know) I think i'd have to castrate you, and shove your bloody cock down your throat and i'd watch you choke to death on it.

Actually I really just considered that and it grossed me out, made my throat hurt, and made me sad.
I'm sorry.

Eagles tours have facetious names on purpose because Henley & Frey KNOW they milking a cash cow.

Is this the same guy that got all righteous about advertising using his voice-a-like just a few days ago? Where's the artistic integrity in charging fans $250 per ticket?

I think it's more a factor of him playing live so sporadically. He doesn't do proper tours, just scattered dates upon the release of an album, or whenever his kids have off school (so his son won't need an excuse out of class in order to spin for his dad).

With a smaller supply of shows then, the price one should be willing to pay to get in is going to be higher.

... Now, when bands like the Stones or Eagles do a proper run of dates, but still charge upward of 75 or 100$US for a ducat, then I can see someone having beef.

Its a benefit for Katrina.
It's not just him performing, but numerous acts alongside him.

Therefore, the 250 dollar ticket

It's not "fans" they're aiming at with these prices. It's those morons who've elevated concerts from simply a band doing what they do to an "experience" that they want to be able to say they were at because it somehow means something that you saw the The Who (or take your pick) in 2003. What should make this obvious is that these are the same people won't don't realize that it is actually something to say you saw The Who in 1975. I realize in this case it's a benefit for the Katrina victims, but I'm talking specifically about the Eagles / The Who / Paul McCartney / etc tours. No concert of any ONE artist is worth anywhere near what they're charging, unless it's like zombie-Elvis or something. I'm not even an Elvis fan, but if he's back from the dead, shuffling around the stage in a cape and grunting about "brains," I'm going to be there. Name your price - I need to see that.

This might be a benefit for Katrina, but on his last tour Waits tickets were priced at $150. And I'm fine with that. I would've liked to see him, but I'd never pay that kind of money for anybody - so big deal, I missed a show.

One thing's for certain - when people pay that kind of money to see a concert, it pretty much assures that Waits wouldn't have many hecklers through his piano ballads.

Good point, but that is absolutely insane. Who does Waits think he is, God himself? I can understand why the Rolling Stones can sell tickets at that kind of price, due to their ENORMOUS popularity, but if Tom Waits can sell tickets at nearly $200 (service charges, etc. included) then almost anyone should be able to. It's not like he's going to be doing anything particularly brilliant or different on stage either. It's not like someone that "HAS TO BE SEEN LIVE".

I don't think I'd pay that much to be able to travel back in time and see Husker Du or Stereolab or pretty much anyone else in their prime.

That's not exactly true. Waits puts on a very theatrical, extremely interesting and intimate show. But he expects the same audience one might get at a stage play rather than a rock concert - and the ticket prices make that statement fairly clearly.

Hey, no you really don't understand. I HAVE to see him live. I HAVE to. It's not an option. It's something that must be done at some point and time.
For any price, at any time. Just not with Dave Matthews and John Mayer.
