One of the better drama's i've seen recently, focusing on stereotypes and bigotry in society. Jennifer Esposito, Don Cheadle, and *gasp* Sandra Bullock are excellent in this. Ludacris was even fairly good.

Anyone else check it out yet?

Here's more info:
Several stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of inter-related characters: a black police detective with a drugged out mother and a thieving younger brother, two car thieves who are constantly theorizing on society and race, the distracted district attorney and his irritated and pampered wife, a racist veteran cop (caring for a sick father at home) who disgusts his more idealistic younger partner, a successful black Hollywood director and his wife who must deal with racist cop, a Persian-immigrant father who buys a gun to protect his shop, a Hispanic locksmith and his young daughter who is afraid of bullets, and more.

Great pick, dude.

Saw this way back in March. Havn't seen but one better all year.

Plus, it was a box-office monster at the theatre where I work. Played for five solid months.

Excellent movie, definitely my Top 5 of the year. I think I've recommended this to everyone I know.

For the most part, I really liked it. Reminded me alot of the movie Grand Canyon.

Question for those of you who saw it. Did you get the impression that the politician (Brendan Fraser) was having an affair with his assistant? I only ask because I didn't pick up on that and others who have seen the movie told me it's very subtly implied.

But his assistant is black.

... Whoa. Wait a minute. What's that?

Huh?

This texture makes the film even better. Plus, I love myself some miscegenation.

it was ok but SO overwrought and SO desperate that i couldn't really respect it. seemed really, really superficial in its treatment of the issues that it wanted to address. i think that it would have been easier to take seriously as an hbo movie or something more trivial.

wow, i totally disagree. i thought the issues and events were approached very honestly, and not superficial at all. for them to cover all of those issues in a 2 hour film, they couldn't possibly dive any deeper into them, or expose them any better.

also, "HBO movies" are less credible than those in theaters?

I'm pretty sure this was a Mike Nichols film, a man whose work I respect & whatnot, but I wasn't super impressed with this picture. What chase said, and I thought the style was deathly close to a PT Anderson flick - 'Magnolia' immediately springs to mind.

And more obviously, Robert Altman, particularly Short Cuts. I enjoy them all, particularly Magnolia.

Subtle? Rent it and see it again.... several scenes where they gaze longingly into each others eyes.

Interesting movie for the first two-thirds, but then I thought it didn't know where to go. From the time Phillippe shot the guy in his car I thought it was just about "trying to shock you" rather than really about the characters. And the end "you embarass me... you embarass yourself" was nice and tight and moral and artifical. It could have been much more unsettling, but it opted for easy resolutions, conclusions, and Hollywood endings. b+.

Exactly what I thought. I liked this movie overall but think it's a tad overrated. Could wind up in my top-5 for the year but that would only be because this is the worst year for movies in my life time.

Thank you. To me it came across like that piece of shit "I Am Sam".

Wanna see a good film on race rent "The Defiant Ones". And no Nichols had nothing to do with this, Thank God.

I thought some of the racism seemed forced. As in, badly scripted bad acting badly directed. Not porn bad acting, but pretty bad for a movie that gets such rave reviews.

Nope, totally missed that.
