Trace was released 10 years ago today, thought this was worth noting. Discuss

Windfall is still one of the best songs of the decade, but will not be tomorrow.

Tear Stained Eye is one of my favorite songs of all time. This is the best album Farrar has ever been a part of in my opinion.

will not be tomorrow ? please explain.

I respect your opinion Haq, but I don't get what you're saying.
When a song has that 'it' quality it never goes away. Would you say the same thing applies to Waterloo Sunset or Strawberry Fields Forever ? The song certainly belongs in the same category as the other two. This record is a timeless, ageless wonder.

I bought this after hearing Drown. I sold it back after hearing nothing else good. Haven't paid attention to Farrar since.

I think what he was saying was that it will no longer technically be from this (meaning the current) decade when tomorrow rolls around. It'll be from the previous decade.

Loogs,
Have to say I'm a bit surprised.
Did you make it to the last track on the record ? A cover of Ron Wood's 'Mystifies Me'. Brilliant

I'm pretty sure this is exactly what he meant. Stumped me a little at first as well.

When I first heard that song on Trace I didn't realize that was a Ron Wood song and thought "Damn, this band sounds just like the Faces". But then I saw the song credits and, somewhere, some little girl's hamster died.

Well, I was gonna say that after all the love it gets around here, I may need to re-address it. It has been 10 years or so, actually 9 since I bought it. Bought it the summer the Olympics were in ATL.

I know someone (Bloor, or Busty) has it, I will get it and report back.

Wow! Ten Years. I too must echo Haq and profess my love for "windfall". Such a damn fine song, and yes timeless too. I feel for you dear senator, that you could not, being such a Southern Gentleman, find love for the folky, folksy, country-rock of the first Farrar foree past the Tupelo. May I suggest a revisit? Like a fine wine, this release has aged quite well.

Holds a solid place in my all-time top ten. Jeff's right about how well this ages. It took me eight years to realize the awesomeness of "Too Early."

Windfall. Yup.

Yeah, that's all I meant. But then if Trace was released Sept. 20, 1995, then yesterday was the last day of its first decade, and the confusion is all for nothing anyway. Sorry.

I thought this thread would generate more discussion. oh well.

I'm really at a loss for words when it comes to this album.
Last night I sat here trying to think of something profound to write about it ... but I can't .... It's one of those records that when it's mentioned, the songs instantly flow through my head. Perhaps one of the quintessential albums of all time.

May the wind take your troubles away.

It is truly an amazing record.
And it's been very very hard for Jay to live up to since its release.

Not that he hasn't released some fine material, it's just that...
Well, it'd be difficult for anyone to live up to an album like that. If he had continued at that level, he would be being hearalded as the new Hank Williams.

This is always the first thing that comes to mind when I think about this album. The other Son Volt albums were ok but his solo stuff is down right boring.

Todd, do you have many of his solo albums or are you basing that more on reviews and word of mouth? I ask because your statement is the conventional wisdom and I avoided buying any post-Trace albums for a long time based on that conventional wisdom. Having explored his work though, I don't really think there's been any dropoff.

His last studio album was such a huge grower for me that I'd now say I like it more than any Wilco album, more than any son volt album and more than most Uncle Tupelo albums. I probably would have agreed with Andyfest on my first 20 listens that it was a snoozefest, but it really clicked for me after seeing him live and listening to it more and more. That said, I recognize I'm probably the only one here who likes it that much.

It's based on the two following Son Volt albums, not so much the solo stuff. You see, after the 2nd two SV records, I stopped buying. I've been curious, but hesatant to spend my money since I don't get to buy much.

As a HUGE Jay fan, from back in the UT days, I've been pretty dissappointed about that. And if I had the money to spend on tons of stuff, I would absoloutely still be picking up his stuff as it was released.

Terroir Blues - Jay Farrar

Jay's best after Trace & Straightaways. If it were anyone else it would be a career best.
