Just one of my periodic frothing-at-the-mouth rants and raves about this fucking amazing band.

If you haven't heard them yet, you are not yet alive.

I downloaded the box set a long time ago (right when it came out) because of someone's constant plugging...I'm sure it was you. But I never listened to it more than a couple tracks. I'll hopefully get around to it one of these days.

For as long as l've been here, Todd, you've talked up Shrimp Boat and for equally as long I've done nothing about it despite my appreciation for the Sea & Cake.

So, where to start?

Steve

Any of their last three albums are equally amazing.
Duende, the penultimate release is probably the most eclectic and has the most Eastern European folk and jazz influences. (RIYL - Telephone-Free Landslide Victory)

Speckly was just reissued by Aum Fidellity and probably has the strongest Appalachian influence of the three. (RIYL - The Carter Family)

Cavale was their final record and is probably closest to The Sea & Cake sound. Also has the strongest soul/R&B influence. (RIYL - TSAC and Smokey Robinson)

Caveat: the RIYLs are all relative and all the noted influences are apparent on all three albums. Some just have more of one than the others. And all RIYLs are applicable to all CDs. Plus, throw in a RIYL for Sun Ra.

Once you have listened and become a fan, THEN (and only then) is the time to pick up the Something Grand box set. And if you do sample it (like Makes No Sense), make sure that you hear songs from ALL THREE (4) of the discs in the box, as they chart the ever-changing sound of the band, and you may take a liking to one period more than another, at forst. (Even as a true-blue fan I still cannot listen to Disc One in its entirety. Too much noise.)

Cool. I guess as a fan of the Sea & Cake Cavale would be the place for me to start then.

It's going on my list

I am not yet alive. Does that make me undeadish? Perhaps, "predead"?

I bought a used copy of Speckly while browsing at a Portland record store a couple of months ago, based solely on your frothing PT. I haven't really listened to it yet---I will soon.

No.
You are just not important enough for me to stop.

And as to the Sun Ra RIYL... no they don't sound like Sun Ra, per se but there is some oddly melodic jazz sax skronk that surfaces on the occasional song. Enough that it is a part of their sound. (And think 1950's Sun Ra, not 1970's electronic.)

np: Sun Ra - Supersonic Jazz

The exclamation points may be a bit Shania for pushing a Sea & Cake RIYL.
