Was threatening to freeze four or five times in the past two days by stuttering through a couple of songs....now it's frozen up solid twice in the past 30 minutes. Reset it both times and it came back....

fuck, I don't wanna have to deal with this every five minutes

Next stop, paperweight. This is what happened to mine. Then it wouldn't reset, then I restored factory settings. Now the computer won't recognize it. That reminds, me tho...need to send it off to get fixed (AGAIN!!)

By resetting, you do mean pressing the menu and play buttons concurrently or clearing it out and restoring the same software (using the iPod updater). I'm assuming the former, and if so you may want to try the latte and copy over a few songs.

Also may be worth getting the latest iPod software if you don't have it.

I think I did just get the latest IPOD software and that's when the problems started

There's a separate iPod software update (EDIT - link) to make it compatible with the latest iTunes release. If you haven't upgraded the iPod, do so ASAP. If you're still junking, use the iPod update software to clear out the hard drive, re-copy a day's worth of songs, and give it a go. If you're still junking, well... crap...

Well, to get the screen fixed, it was like $100, but i dunno about this one

ipodresq will ship you a box, and diagnose what's wrong with it, and then call you for $29.99

what's wrong with yours/what Generation is it?

I think you will find it infintely less expensive than a new one.

And I was worried my headphone jack was fucked, but they tested it and told me they could replace it, but it'd be fine w/o...

I like them folks.

Nope. This is only for Nanos. If you updated your Ipod with the 2005-06-26 Updater you have all the updates you're going to get.

Did you accidently disconnect it before Windows had ejected it? The only time, one time, that I had similar behavior was when I pulled the plug out before the Ipod had gone back to the menu screen instead of the blinking charge screen. I reset, plugged it back in, ejected it, and it worked perfectly after that.

It depends on the model. Your model's latest may be 2005-06-26, but I know 1.2 for the iPod Photo was released right around iTunes 4.9 (mid-August?).

Yeah, drinking coffee is always better than actually dealing with problems.

Infinitely less, nothin'. I have a 30GB 3G. My estimated repairs, assuming the hard drive is DOA:

$199 new hard drive
$30 discounted battery replacement
$30 shipping
____
$259

I could get a new (fully warranted) ipod for $330, or a new Zen for $210, or a new Dell for $245, all shipped. I'm selling this one on ebay.

Quotin' the Apple site: "Pod Updater 2005-09-06 includes new iPod Software 1.0 for iPod nano. iPod Updater 2005-09-06 contains the same software versions as iPod Updater 2005-06-26 for all other iPod models." T'ain't nothin' new for any Ipods 'cept the Nano.

I could have sworn that I've updated my software much more recently (and I check pretty frequently). Then again, I was gone for a month. Bah.

Still, Spade might have old firmware, and if he doesn't have any updater software he can't re-initialize the drive.
