1. The Velvet Underground (underground)
2. Pet Shop Boys (well crafted pop)
3. Kraftwerk (electronic noises)
4. Robert Johnson (folk/roots music)
5. Steely Dan (guitars that sound awesome)

Funny.... proves music is the universal solvent, more basic than politics or economic theory. This is a list I was making for me if you replace NWA with Miles Davis.

But playing in another way.... trying to triangulate (quintupulate?) a truth from not "favorites" but disparate ingredients:

The Who
Roxy Music
Blue Nile
X
Wilco

Well Billy already kinda did mine but this would be the accurate group:

T.Rex
Beatles
The Cars
Whiskeytown
Joseph Arthur

Those seem to be representative of most everything I listen to. I think I can draw lines from just about every band I listen to back to these bands.

radiohead (what got me listening to rock in the first place)
gang of four (roots of all the dance punk / whatever-you-want-to-call-it bands that i listen to these days)
mark farina (ok, he's a dj, but house is another part of my music culture that i love dearly so i have to include this)
portishead (just because)
richie hawtin (because i love techno)

geez, that was hard. i just tried to pick my favorite artists from the type of genres i listen to the most that influenced most of my taste in music... i guess.

i probably should have put one brit pop type artist on there like The Smiths or something as i listen to a lot of that music...this is hard though.

Skinny Puppy (darker stuff, industrial)
Black Sabbath (metal)
Pink Floyd (spacey pop)
Kraftwerk (beats, electro, new-wavey)
Yes (prog)

This is hard, because I also listen to stuff like The Devics and Friends of Dean Martinez and other more traditionally instrumented musics...

Ok, now find the person most similar to yours, and then get them to do a 6 through 10 list and see if the similarities hold up.

Or don't, whatever.

tough one, but considering a lot of bands that I like derive inspiration from the same artists or are very similar, I guess it would be:

- David Bowie
- Jimi Hendrix
- Blondie
- Dead Kennedys
- Sly and the Family Stone

Now keep in mind I wouldn't necessarily categorize these people as my top five favorite artists, but I think by listening to them, you can get a good idea of what I prefer. I neglected to name a singer/songwriter type person, like Dylan, although I really like a lot of people like that as well.

and as a precursor, the band that turned me on to music in general... Led Zeppelin

So far, Rick Derris is the only person who's posted where I like all five artists they listed. I never would have guessed.

Then again, Clerks would be one of my five if we were doing this in terms of movies, so I guess there's that.
