I also reccommend walking around the west village, I love the area.
Top of the empire state building also reccommended, buy your tickets online first, saves about an hour of waiting on line to buy them at the building. And dont rush off, you can stay up there as long as you want.
Also, walk around the Lower East Side, (East Houston is the north border, Delancey Street is the south border, and Allen St. makes the west border, east border is debatable) A few favorite places - Pianos @ Ludlow and Stanton, Max Fish on Ludlow, San Loco on Stanton, Lotus bar on Stanton and Clinton, Sin-e (not Sin-e Bar) on Attorney between houston and stanton.
Best happy hour - The Johnsons on Rivington and Essex - $2 beers and wells from 4-9. you might find me there! not sure how it is on weekends.
Also, a favorite bar of mine is Lit, on Second Ave (btwn 5th and 6th) dont miss the cave like downstairs, where bands play. About midnight, they do away with the cover charge, and you can smoke (if you smoke). Also a good happy hour.
DONT miss the South Street Seaport, I love it, very romantic at night or when the tourists have subsided. Sunday and Saterday afternoons can be nerve wrecking though be warned. It is worth the walk though for an awesome view of all three bridges to Brooklyn.
Museums, always great at anytime. I second that suggestion.
Something I reccomend to someone interested in visitng the World Trade Center site - take a Path Train with a NEWARK desitnation (PATH - its like the subway, with a different name and .50 cents cheaper) to the first stop in Jersey. The path train tracks are right in the ground zero pit, and effect of being in there, and seeing sides of the foundation, its very moving. The first stop in Jersey is Exchange Place, and right on the water, you will get great views of the manhattan skyline. This is only to those who are strong and cool enough.
Saturday nights there is a party at Luke and Leroy's on 7th avenue (across from the two corners of St. Luke's Place, and Leroy Street) called Misshapes - may be your thing (some of my friends go there, its a young crowd, but fun music to dance - new wave, no wave, disco punk, etc.) mixed crowd, pretty girls, prettier boys.
ok, im out of ideas for now. - danny
