I've stopped listening to this CD because there's reall no reason to anymore: it plays in my head as I sleep pretty much every night now.

(and I love it)

I haven't been able to check this board in ages. It was a big non-surprise when I clicked over here this morning and found I was late to the party on this one. I picked up the CD just yesterday on a whim. The tatooed gal at the record store just said "lots of synths", that was enough for me.

After a couple of listens I do pick up a bit of an Arcade Fire vibe in spots, especially with vocals. My first impressions though was more of herky jerky Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs kind of thing especially after the first couple of tracks but then it calmed down and seemed to switch gears. If this is essentially a compilation of EPs then that makes some sense to me. First impressions so who knows but I liked it quite a bit.

Montreal (that's where this band is from right?) is kind of becoming this year's Omaha. Lot's of stuff I like coming from there.

i don't really think arcade fire when i hear this. i do think modest mouse, but not in the annoyingly too-similar similarities kind of way. i thought it was wonderfully produced and some of the songs are really special and well-arranged. i really didn't listen much to their earlier stuff, but now i'm much more curious. what a nice album.

Well obviously not everyone is a bandwagon jumper and will start listening to this because pfk reviewed it, although a lot will. People have been posting about this band for awhile (thread was started in Jul and i remember posts before that) so obviously Dalen, Pumachik et al are into this band quite a bit, and if they enjoy it then hey, whatever.

quite a bit is an understatement, i think obsessed is more like it. ;)

although i like the versions of grounds for divorce and dear sons & daughters on the original 6-song ep MUCH better... i think i said that before though.

Picked this up yesterday, and I really like most of the new versions, especially "Modern World," which is obviously a vast improvement from the demo. I still like the slower version of "It's a Curse," but maybe the new one will grow on me.

Is it just me or does "Heart's on Fire" sound similar to Wilco's "Kamera"?

Picked this up yesterday. Gave it a listen today.

On first blush (never heard the EPs) I don't see how people are saying this sounds anything like The Arcade Fire. Modest Mouse or Clap You Hands... definitely. I do like the synths and guitars. The vocals will take some growing.

Is it me or is this style of vocals the new thing? I mean the way he sings on "Grounds for Divorce" is so trembly that it kinda sounds like he's trying hard to work through a slight seizure. Not really a dealbreaker, but I'd like him to use his natural voice a little more. Thank you Isaac Brock.

Yes. I agree. This Funeral II stuff----I'm just not hearing it either. Definitely more MM influences than AF. I think the Arcade Fire album is much better than this one. I don't dislike ATTQM, but it just isn't in nearly the same category as Funeral for me.

Agreed that this sounds very little like Arcade Fire, but it could almost reach the same category for me. The lyrics are powerful and sincere, like Arcade Fire, and the music is played with such ferocity. The first three songs leading off the album are a great trio. Strong all the way through.

I wish people would stop comparing all these bands to the talking heads, it dishonours their name

I'm so ashamed for even bringing up this Funeral II stuff. I did say that it was after one listen. On further review, I think that it was just the vocals that gave me that impression. I am more impressed with each successive listen. Favorably.

Well, I liked the first song, but I think it's because it sounded strangely familiar. Why is that?

Someone tell me where I could have heard it because I can't seem to figure it out.

I think i've heard it on TV, or maybe it was a song from the EP or something? I don't know, I heard a couple songs of theirs last school year, but I don't know if that happened to be one of them.

I like the Arcade Fire, don't see the link, I really dislike Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and I do not see the Talking Heads.

It really doesn't matter. I was just curious as to why it sounded familiar, but my curiosity won't kill me.
Yeah, I didn't like the rest so much. It wasn't to the point where I hated it but I just can't really get into it. Also it's really nothing memorable, to me. When I think about it I can't remember a single song besides the opening track.

I'm glad everyone else is enjoying it. The voice also gets on my nerves, and that's coming from someone who is obsessed with Tom Waits (no comparison here, but for the "weird voice" reference) and I loved Antony & the Johnsons.

So far, pretty "meh". I'd probably shelf it after a couple of more listens. Who knows maybe it's a grower? They DEFINITELY don't sound like Talking Heads. Who is making this comparisons anyway? Some songs sound overtly Modest Mouse-ish, but that's probably because head Mouse recorded it, right?

i think the comparisons to arcade fire are: 1. they're also from montreal and the whole trend of canadian bands blowing up, 2. the overdone vocals (which i like), and 3. some have said they will be the "next" arcade fire.

there's actually 2 lead singers (spencer & dan) and both sound exactly the same.
