explain yourself, please.

Actually I'm serious. It's a total minimalist soundtrack which has a very cool vibe to it. I don't think Carpenter is given enough recognition for some of his scores.

I just looked it up and realized the flick is from 1976, so i totally believe you. I remember some of the music from Escape from New York as being that retro futuristic sound from the eighties. Spooky, piercing keyboards. Is this one anything like it?

Yeah it's definitely similar to Escape from New York. Also reminds of at least one Dirty Harry score (probably the first one). Anyway, I just dig on those kinds of vibes.

I'm being inexorably drawn into your discussion, but only because I want to see how far the blue tunnel of replies will go.

I, too, am being sucked into the vortex.

Some others not mentioned:

Performance - which I'd list if only for the Stones' "Memo From Turner", but it also includes the Last Poets, Ry Cooder, Buffy St. Marie, and Randy Newman totally rockin' out like he's in the Drive-by Truckers)

First Love, Last Rites - Shudder To Think writes all the music, sits in as the house band, and invites guest vocalists like Liz Phair, Robin Zander, Jeff Buckley, Billy Corgan, Nina Persson, Matt Johnson, and John Doe

Kids In The Hall: Brain Candy - surprisingly good album with a sustained mood of introspective whimsy thanks to the likes of Yo La Tengo, GBV, the Odds, Stereolab, Pavement, and the Tragically Hip

Niagara Niagara - a great sampler of moody folk/alt.country artists like Martin Sexton, Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, Cowboy Junkies, and that E.T. kid Henry Thomas' band the Blue Heelers

Imagine - John Lennon (the movie sndtrk not the album of same name)

Natural Born Killers

The Big Chill (cheesy but, well...)

and i second magnolia, singles, all wes andersen, AND if The Last Waltz counts i nominate it to be the all time greatest movie soundtrack EVER.

I second that and the ones already mentioned such as:

Trainspotting
24 Hour Party People
Donnie Darko
Rules of Attraction

Also:
8 Mile (the 2nd soundtrack that came out)
Kill Bill V. 1, or any QT film soundtrack for that matter

What...am I the only person with Pretty in Pink & Some Kind of Wonderful on a 90 minute cassette?

Fine. How about The Slaughter Rule? Jay Farrar, Neko Case, Uncle Tupelo, Pernice Brothers, etc.

The "Thumbsucker" score released this year has become one of my favorite soundtracks. Elliot Smith's last recorded material and Polyphonic Spree/Tim Delaughter returning to form = top notch stuff.

Altered States is a pretty chaotic soundtrack.

Dead Presidents (vol 1 & 2)
Boogie Nights
Angels in the Universe (Sigur Ros)
Lost in Translation
Royal Tenenbaums
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Fight Club (has its moments)
Sexy Beast
SLC Punk (not bad)

Bones (basically a Snoop Dogg album)
Get Rich or Die Tryin' (basically a new 50 Cent album)

My favorite soundtrack of all time is probably Peter Gabriel's Passion. I also listen to Lost Highway a lot.
