I love MMJ and all, but damn, I barely got through 3 songs on my commute to work. Their songs never felt long to me but on a 20-minute commute, they're not a very good choice.

With that said, anyone know when their new album is due to come out?

On It Still Moves I can never tell where one song ends and the next begins. Which is good for background-type listening, but maybe not great for your situation. :)

the new record i feel is more single oreiented. By that i mean the songs are more on the traditional side than their older stuff. I think only one track approaches the 7 minute mark. There are'nt those rumbling souhtern rock songs on the here, just compact songs with a heavy focus on the keyboard. It's rather weak to me right now, maybe that will change with repeated listens. They do employ different sounscapes in the new one which is refreshing but i'm just not convinced yet if it come together.

I will be devastated if this album disappoints.

Sounds good on the highway, but I could never listen to MMJ in the city. Not a great fit.

I like the new one even though it doesn't really sound like anything they've done before.

I'm with shiv. It's solid, but definitely NOT It Still Moves. There's nothing like "Magheeta" to be found on Z.

The new one was bound to disappoint, even though it's a solid record.

Im sorry, but I totally disagree with this being weaker than other MMJ. I think its different and probably their best work. Individual perception is obviously everything, and I may soften on it after a few more listens, but i was definitely entranced.

I think there are some interesting influences on here (simple minds and dave matthews, oddly enough, and the outro from gideon is lifted verbatim from coldplay) but it really stands on its own.

Maybe its just that everybody likes different things about a band like this, and that they can appeal to multiple audiences (audienci?)

I don't think it's weak at all and it's got a pretty good shot at being my album of the year

No "Magheeta", but there's "Gideon" which is just as epic, but more in a Spiritualized/early The Verve way which I like much more. I'm really digging the new record. It's refreshing that they moved away from the more trad-rock sound and created something that sounds all their own.

Just to clarify, I don't think Z is necessarily of any less quality than It Still Moves, it's just not as much rock-out-with-your-cock-out. Not sure I'd say one is better than the other...it's really an apples and oranges scenario. I like 'em both, but just might get the hankering to hear one of them more often than I get the hankering to hear the other one.

Of course, I haven't yet spent as much time with Z, so my points may be as moot as they are convoluted.

So for anyone interested and not a corporation-hating commie, Best Buy has the new one on sale for $7.99 this week.

That's enough cause for me to probably pick it up. I'd be curious though what others who have heard it think. I'm a big fan of "At Dawn", like "Tennessee Fire", but could take or leave "It Still Moves". Anyone care to predict whether I'd like the new one?

np: Yankees v. Redsox

Its good Billy G. Nice mix of some jammier stuff. "What A Wonderful Man" is a bona fide hit single. The bass player and keys really steal the album to me.

My only complaint is that sometimes they genre surf a little too much especially with regard to tempos. Like they check off genres on a list.

I think you'll like it though and for $7.99? Sheeeee.

i predict billy g will not like the new one.
while it is not very similar to it still moves, which you don't seem to like, it is even further away from at dawn and tennessee fire.

Heard this pretty much in its entirety in Grimey's yesterday and was very impressed. Prediction: At Dawn>TN Fire>Z>It Still Moves>All that other crap.
