Every musical genre, that is.
It seems like, no matter what the genre, once it's been around for a while, the cliches become apparent.

You know that I love power pop, but goddamn if there aren't a slew of bands out there that sound good, but really are doing nothing but connecting the dots to make
[generic label]Power Pop[/generic label]

Sweet melody + 3-part harmonies + crunchy guitars = Power Pop

Kinda makes me sad.
And these bands do pretty well because they appeal to a certain crowd.

I still enjoy a lot of it, but not as much or as frequently as I used to.
Just go to any International Pop Overthrow show for a sampling of these solidly competent, yet generic bands.

Listening to one of them right now. And it's good. It's just that it could be any of a thousand other bands. (And no, I won't name names, because I have met these guys before and I like them. No it's not the Pilots.)

Do what I did...explore other genres and you'll be a happy man.
Folk music is where it's at.

There have always been cliches. We just don't remember them, for good reason.

I have to say, if you're gonna be upset by cliches, then it seems like Popwer Pop Pond is a shitty place to go fishing.

Not fishing for cliches.
Just noticing them in Power Pop recently - a genre I've always enjoyed.
And I do explore other genres - a lot. Just look at my NP for the day and you'll get an idea.

"fishing" meaning sampling music from the field regularly. Most days you come up with something good. But there's certainly gonna be some fluff in there... it's not russian folk music.

Gah! I've had "Tom Dooley" stuck in my head for the past 45 minutes.

Hang your head, Tom Dooley,
Hang your head and cry;
You killed poor Laurie Foster,
And you know you're bound to die

That's why having a short attention span is so important.

It's funny you chose those words, considering the person who started this thread. I wonder.

Not trying to be a dick at all, but you hardly listen to anything besides indie rock/pop from everything I've seen.
