Ever since I heard "Across 110th Street" on that Tarentella (sic)soundtrack... I've been powerfully drawn to the notion that there is a treasure of forgotten soul music. Hearing Womack do it again on the last Los Lobos CD confirmed my neurotic need to acquire but ONE MORE kind of music. OCD heavy on the CD's.

Beyond Marvin Gaye and S. Wonder's classic work, what other pre-disco soul classics are essential.

I Amazoned in and ordered classic Spinners, Chilites, Stylistics, Curtis Mayfield... what else? How else can feed my monkey? Especially something on that grand, anthemic, urban renewal vibe of 110th St?

This is a job for the expertise of billy g.

I wanna suggest Candi Staton, but she might be more R&B than the sweet soul you're looking for.

Once in a blue moon I'll put on "Pimps, Playas & Private Eyes". Dunno if the monkey'll bite, though.

A mix I put together this summer when the AC was broken. It's not exactly all along the lines of 110th Street, and it also (sorta) goes in reverse chronological order, but it might shake an idea or two loose.

01 Billy Preston :: "Outta Space"
02 Pointer Sisters :: "How Long (Betcha Got A Chick On The Side)"
03 Chambers Brothers :: "Funky"
04 Isaac Hayes :: "Never Can Say Goodbye"
05 Bobby Womack :: "Across 110th Street"
06 Isley Brothers :: "That Lady (Part 1 & Part 2)"
07 William DeVaughn :: "Be Thankful For What You Got"
08 Curtis Mayfield :: "Power To The People (Demo)"
09 War :: "City, Country, City"
10 Bill Withers :: "Grandma's Hands"
11 Wilson Pickett :: "Mustang Sally"
12 The Supremes :: "Stoned Love"
13 Sam & Dave :: "Wrap It Up"
14 Stevie Wonder :: "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing"
15 Ike & Tina Turner :: "Proud Mary"

Don't forget The Temptations ("Ball of Confusion"!), Isaac Hayes or even smooth it out with a little William Bell.

the man speaks the truth.

Live at R.C's is incredible, as Billy recommended. "After Laughter (Comes Tears) by Wendy Rene and immortalized by the Wu-Tang Clan on "Tearz"

Syl Johnson is one i've really gotten into lately, and that Rasputin Stash record is great.

based on the subject, i thought this thread would be about arthur conley. his sweet soul music album was produced by otis redding, but is from 1967 - maybe a little earlier than you're looking for. it's totally great, though.

Great suggestions all... just the things to fix the hunger. I wish I had posted before I bought the Chi-Lites et. al. which will sound pretty pop-ish combared to "Express Yourself."

If you wanna avoid the popish sounding stuff, gotta second the suggestion of the Stax box set. That's Memphis soul paradise right there.

If you don't wanna spring for the box, at least pick up some Otis Redding, Booker T and the MGs and maybe some Rufus and/or Carla Thomas.

Etta James is a great female soul/blues singer. Then there was Mavis Staples of the Staple Singers.

Jackie Wilson was a great, early soul singer. If you wanna go back that far, there's always Frankie Lyman and the Teenagers, veering more into doo-wop

While Curtis Mayfield is great, Jerry Butler of the Impressions also did some great solo work.

There's always Percy Sledge. He's got more than just When A Man Loves a Women in him.

For something smoother, there's always the Del-Phonics. Sam Cooke is a personal soul favorite, but may be more pop than you're looking for.

Just realized pretty much all my suggestions are earlier than you're looking for...sorry

I think the Gil Scott-Heron is more along the lines of what Harry's looking for but these are both great albums.

I'm pretty sure Dustygroove.com has the Syreeta two-fer and her album "One to One" which is equally stellar. Damen, have you heard Gary Bartz "Anthology"? Its' more jazz than soul, but its soulful and Syreeta sings on two songs.

Dustygroove is where you want to go if you're really serious about beefing up your soul collection.

so true...this is the only Charles Wright I own which I have a hard time explaining cause it really is great.

Wax Poetics had an interview with Charles Wright this winter. I got a big kick out of reading about a club they used to play in the late 60's

Charles Wright Wrote:
We were performing at a club, at the corner of Hollywood and Vine, called the Haunted House. It was a very swank club, you walk in and you're walking down a [landing], till you get to the opening of the club, there's a huge Frankenstein Monster that growls, and there's the Creature of the Black Lagoon, there's some witch, and over there, there's dracula and somebody, and as you walk in there's a thing in the floor, a hole that blows women's dresses up. It was a kind of exciting place to go into. And when you got down to the belly it opened up into a swank nightclub with beautiful red seating. The stage was like a monster with big bloodshot eyes, nostrils and his tongue was the stage actually....And when we got into the groove, the guy at the door would push a buttom and steam would come out of his nostrils. We worked there a long time, about two and a half years. I had Warner Brothers back a truck up to the club and we recorded half of our together album there.

You really need to rent Wattstax too. So great, I ended up buying a copy.

Other recommendations based on the Womack/Mayfield vibe:

Eugene McDaniel "Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse"/"Outlaw"
Baby Huey "Living Legend - The Baby Huey Story"
Isaac Hayes "Shaft"
Donny Hathaway "Everything is Everything"
The Curtom Story (3 disc box from Mayfield's label av/ from dustygroove for $22'ish)
Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul "Golden Classics"

I could recommend a lot more but that's probably good for now. Just ask if you want more.

You've got the Spinners & Stylistics in there, so I'd add these :

The Moments : "Love On A Two-Way Street"

And some Delfonics.

"Hey, man...this is a fantastic album. Lemme borrow it."

"Nooooo, my brother...you got ta buy your own."

don't think it was mentioned yet:

Dobie Grey - Drift Away

What a great song. Otis also covered it. Dobie also had another hit (i believe) back in the late 60's with "The In Crowd"
