Woops! Posted this in another topic instead of creating a new one.

Anyway, some co-workers have asked me if I want to check out The Frames tomorrow night at The Earl. Irish band, been around awhile...and that's all I really know.

Can anyone tell me if they're worth my time.

Steve

They're ok live. I've seen them twice this year. Lots of energy but it's almost cheesy the way they do it. My roommate loves them which is why I've seen them twice. I think they have a couple ok songs and they're ok live. If you like them, they're worth seeing. If you're indifferent to their music I'd say avoid it unless you get cheap tickets or the person asking you to go has no one else to go with.

I think they're definitely worth seeing, Steve. And wait 'til Dana signs on, she'll further encourage you to go.

Not to put them in a box just because they're an Irish band, but are they at all like the Pogues, Black 47?

Me likey the Frames almost as much as Dana.

I am seeing them next weekend in Chicago and can't wait.

1. They are nothing like the Pogues.

2. They are similar in ways to Catherine Wheel without the crunch.

3. They have alot of emotion in their song writing. Like an Irish Death Cab.

4. Glen Hansard, Singer/Guitarist, was in the movie "The Commitments" back in the early 90's as that bands guitarist if you have ever seen that.

5. They do have a fiddle player/violinist who is amazing.

one of the best shows i've ever seen (like, ever) was the frames at the hideout in chicago. it was epic, a celebration, it reminded me of how much i love music.

Hey Spontaneous is a big fan too! I must admit, I didn't see the Frames on this last tour, just because I think I'd had a bit of Frames overdosing. They are a great band live, but as someone previously mentioned, if you're not familiar with their tunes or indifferent about them, I'd just save your money.

Glen is quite the showman (which can be good and bad), but seeing Colm play the violin is almost worth the money right there. Josh Ritter is opening for them, and the Frames' former drummer Dave Hingerty plays with him. I would recommend Josh too, if you're into the singer-songwriter folky bent.

Also, Glen can be quite the moody prick, so depending on when you're seeing him, you never know what you're gonna get. This show you're referring to is in Atlanta, right? My sister and some of her friends are going... you'll have to let me know if they sing happy birthday to her!

edit: if you do end up chatting with the band, do NOT mention the whole Commitments thing to Glen-- I hear he gets pissy when people ask him about it. Your best bet on friendliness is from Rob (guitarist) and Joe (bassist).

Yeah, the show is at the Earl. Sounds like something I'd be interested in, but it'll probably come down to what kind of mood I'm in tomorrow.

Thanks for the input!

Mediocre band if you are sober.

But now the A-Frames... Pacific Northwest Neo-Joy Division - now there's an interesting band...

Ooooh. Yes. Go see them. I've only seen them once, but it was well worth the three hour drive. Lots of energy. Glen was on that night.

Hey, sorry, it's been a crazy morning.

Yeah, I decided what the hell and decided to go to the show. Thought the band was pretty tight and energetic. Didn't know any of the songs, of course, but the Frames enthusiast who was with us was telling us what freakin' album each song was from and it turned out that the songs I liked most were off their latest album.

If I hadn't known that the guy was from the Commitments I would not have even recognized him.

They did wish a happy birthday and dedicate a song to Jennifer, Dana! Don't know if that's who you said was going to the show.

One of their songs broke off into a tune from Willy Wonka!! In another they played a bit from Ring of Fire-2nd time in 2 weeks (Coldplay) I've heard a UK band play it.

I would definitely recommend them for a no frills (and that's not a putdown) good show.

Glad I went, although, my co-workers are even more annoying outside of the job!

Steve

Hmm, Jennifer is a friend of my sister's, but it's definitely not her birthday! My sister's name is Beth, and she would have been with a group of folks, probably up front dancing.

Yeah, the Willy Wonka tune you're thinking of is called "Star, Star" and they do that little impromptu bit at the end. It's on the "Dance the Devil" album. They've also been doing "Ring of Fire" a while now... maybe as a bridge to their song "Fake?" That song is on their latest album, "Burn the Maps." If you ever want to hear anything, PM me, and I can send it on.

Isn't Colm, their violinist, just freaking amazing??? Glad you had a good time!

That would be 'Star Star' and 'Lay Me Down'. I love when they do that.

Could be wrong about the name (Jennifer), Dana, as I had had a few before the show even started.
I thought it was Jennifer. When you talk to your sis ask her for me so I"ll know if I was already screwed up by that point.

oops, I think Stacey is right... the Johnny Cash stuff goes with "Lay Me Down." I haven't talked to my sister yet (she was on a plane to Chicago this morning), but I think that Glen might have dedicated a song to her, but accidentally called her Bethany. I'll find out for sure later.

ok, finally talked with my sister. Glen did start off "Star Star" by dedicating it to Beth. So that's cool. She also got happy birthday sung to her by her friends and Josh Ritter himself. She's a very happy girl!

Very cool:

Quote:
-- On August 2, Salvo will reissue three albums from the Frames, the Irish rock band that the Swell Season's Glen Hansard led long before starring in Once. Expanded versions of the 90s albums Another Love Song, Fitzcarraldo, and Dance the Devil are all due, and the Frames will play a rare show in September at Ireland's Electric Picnic festival.
